removing external HDD without ''safely removing it''

Sometimes when i try to disconncect my external HDD from my pc. But it says it's being used while the drive is sitting idle. This doesn't happen every time. In the drive policies the Write cache is disabeld so the drive can be disconnected without the option ''remove safe'' according to windows. But I wonder if that's really true. The drive is spinning but sitting idle. When the remove option does work it spins down. Can a sudden loss in power damage the drive?  and can I just unplug it when it's sitting idle?

Just put your computer to sleep. Once it's asleep and the drive has spun down (you can feel it) you're able to disconnect it. Make sure when doing this that you weren't writing to the drive or anything like that.

I think there's a software solution for that called unlocker.

So when u cant safely remove the drive unlocker will pop up and kill whatever apps that are currently using the drive even though its idling.
