Hey everyone, so I just built and put together a brand new pc, specs are as follows:

intel i7-7700k processor

asus z270e gaming motherboard

gskill trident 16gb (2 8gb) ram ddr4

nvidia gtx 980ti graphics card

500gb ssd (850 evo)

4tb Western digitial hard drive

evga 1000W power supply gold

2 new monitors - asus vg278q 27" monitors 144hz

I am running into 2 different problems that go back and forth.

1. computer is turned on (all fans on, all spinning, graphics card lights up and indicates it's on, computer is all on) but the problem is that the monitors are black. no display is shown even though the computer is completely turned on

2. 90% of the time the monitors have a black screen not displaying anything. However 10% of the time when I turn on the computer the monitors DO work as intended. I was actually able to download all MB drivers, gpu drivers, etc. Then the computer will randomly freeze, and when i restart it, issue #1 appears again.

It's been like this the last 8 hours since I completed the build. I have checked any and all cables in the case, unlplugged and replugged them back in. Disconnected gpu and plug back in, disconnected cpu and plugged it back in, disconnected RAM and plugged them back in (each time in different slots, exp: 1 and 3, then 2 and 4 repeatedly. I even disconnected everything from the power supply unit and reconnected everything back in. But the above 2 issues keep occurring no matter what I do.

Can anyone assist?

Take out the GPU and plug one monitor into the motherboard and see if the PC works that way. That will determine if it's a GPU issue or something else. You specified that it is a newly built PC. Are any parts used (like SSD or something)?

No, I got it about a year and a half ago brand new from the box, still have the box and everything. The graphics card I have was used in my last pc (had been running perfectly none of these issues). I only transferred my graphics card from my old build, to the new one

Some of the parts are used (but they were all in my last pc build, I only transferred them to the new build)

The hardware I transferred are as follows: 500gb ssd, 4tb western digital hard drive, 980ti graphics card

Everything else is brand new

1) Remove GPU try to run the PC without the GPU

2) Did you wipe the SSD and reinstall Windows or just move the drive?

I will try it right now, glad I have my work laptop in handy.

No, SSD was not wiped, I just moved the drive

Wipe the SSD completely and reinstall Windows. With a new build, it's a good practice to do in general. You can always reinstall programs, just backup any files you need that are saved on there. You can create a Windows install USB from the Internet. You are probably having some driver interference at least. Did you try to run the PC without the GPU installed (monitor(s) plugged into mobo?

  • If you are having issues with the Windows create media utility (if you use it), I found that Windows system-locked the utility to specific operating systems and browsers, so I needed to download a Chrome extension to emulate my browser to make it work.

The funny thing is, I have another 500gb ssd (same brand) that is brand new, parents thought I needed it. Anyways, it's a completely clean SSD, I will replace it with the one in there now

I don't think that will solve your post issue though. You said that you got into Windows once but normally you get no display at all even though fans and lights turn on and stay on? Does your Mobo have a postcode readout or debug LEDs?

The only thing that lights up (just turned on pc again, got into bios, froze in bios) is an orange LED that has the text "pwr led"

Okay, try to boot without GPU still and with only a single stick of RAM, if that doesn't work, try the other stick. Also, when you boot, look for lights right above the AXT24 pin connector, they are debug LEDs that can notify you of issues.

These are the only lights that pop up. The green light only comes on when the monitors actually turn on, otherwise it's just the orange led

If it stays on, it indicates a boot device issue. If any of them stay on, it indicates an issue with the component that that light represents. Just to be safe, clear CMOS and try again without GPU and with only a single stick of RAM. It may be a mobo issue. I don't think it's a bad PSU as it is a high-quality PSU, well within its rating, and brand new.

You got me beat there, unfortunately I do not know how to clear an CMOS, while i've built 4 computer previously (this being the 4th) Don't think i've ever messed with CMOS since I don't know what it is

There is a button battery on your motherboard. Take it out, hold the power button for 30 seconds (with the PSU off) and put it back in.

Right below top PCIe slot. Also, do all your testing without the GPU to nail down the issue.
