8th gen update - motherboard suggestion?

WkdPaul

So, I have enough spare money to get an Intel 8th gen update, I'll keep most of my current build and will only be changing the CPU, motherboard and RAM.

While I could wait for Ryzen 2 I won't, and will be getting a 8700k.

My total budget including taxes and shipping is $1100 Canadian pesos

Not too sure about what motherboard and RAM to get so here's a first draft ;

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Wg6LM8

I could purchase everything now but I think I'll wait and see if there are any sales, or used parts (mostly RAM) that I could grab on Reddit (HardwareSwap sub) and see if you guys have better suggestion for the motherboard.

I might sell the 4670k and 8GB of RAM (current build in signature), so that might bump my budget, but I'm not sure yet as I'm sure I could find good use of that CPU... So for now the budget hard ceiling is $1100 CAD as stated above.

Any way @M.Yurizaki and I can convince you go for the locked variant i7 8700 instead for more value? :P

If you want to overclock for real the Prime-A is probably one of the best advises.

I would prefer the k variant as I prefer playing around with OC, plus I have the money for it, so why not?

BTW, the locked 8700 price isn't far enough from the 8700k up here in CanadiaLand, it's only around $55 cheaper ;

Yes but then you cheap on cooling and motherboard as well without the need for a delidd and you get identical performance of the 8700k at stock :P

Like I did a little powerful mATX beast ^^

Any ways I get it that some want to play with overclocking nonetheless, as stated enough the Asus Prime-A is pretty much what you should get, beefy cooling solution will be necessary, memory wise it depends if you want the easiness of a XMP ready profile or if you're cool tweaking and overclocking manually, Coffee Lake IMC is so advanced that any 2666mhz rated memory should work at 2933mhz or 3200mhz on acceptable timings, it only takes you to try it out.

@Princess Cadence yeah, I didn't mention the cooling but I will get something adequate since I figured I wouldn't go to $1100 with only the 8700k, a mobo and 8-16GB of RAM, so whatever is left over will be for a nice beefy air cooler (not the EVO I'm using now). :)

@Princess Cadence well thanks for planting the seed!!!

I switched to a 8700 (locked SKU) and got more RAM (not liking the red theme most stick seem to have) :)

Well if it serves you for reassurance I have not felt in any way "limited" by not having those few extra mhz ^^

I hope every thing goes smoothly will love to see the end result and how you feel with it, cheers!

Well the locked processor doesn't require special care on the vrm and power phases, it's just 65w tdp any ways... you could aim for more affordable motherboards should you want to, and memory wise it only comes down to how much you're willing to try out overclocking it, both kits can do 3200mhz if you get the timings right, Intel's IMC does all the work nowadays.

@Princess Cadence Yeah, it's just that I just love the look of the white crucial RAM with the motherboard accents ... I'm even thinking of getting the 32GB (8GB*4) kit!!! :x

(I know it's not the Asus Prime-A in this picture but close enough)

CPU bought, BTW, part of that $1100 budget was an Amazon gift card, so I used that to pay a part of the CPU ;)

A good price / feature mobo would be the Z370 Extreme. You might want to check it out...

So, FINALLY ... I'll be getting the MSI Z370-A, 2x8GB of Crucial Sport LT (white), the Deepcool Neptwin and a Phanteks Eclipse P400 Tempered glass (black) :)

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Fyrq6X (BTW, the price on the CPU cooler is wrong, so that's why I entered a manual price, I can grab one locally at CanadaComputers for $50).

When all the parts will be in next week I'll make a build log of the upgrade! ;)

Finally have everything.

Not the RAM I wanted but it's ok :)

BTW, sorry for the dusty motherboard box, my house is SUPER dusty! :( That's why I'm getting a P400s, having an unfiltered case is just horrible!!!
