I've been using Cooler Master R4 fans to cool my top mounted radiator (I have them set up as intake). They aren't bad but they're ridiculously loud and I cannot stand them any more. I received a pair of Yate Loon D12SM-12 fans for free, and I was wondering whether or not these would be a good set of fans for a 240mm radiator (I plan on switching the fan orientation from intake to exhaust, so the fans will be on top of the rad pulling air through the top mounted radiator). Alternatively, I could purchase a pair of Corsair SP120 fans, but I would rather not spend the extra money if the Yate Loons are good enough. Would the Corsair fans provide a large benefit in terms of cooling/noise? Thanks for the help!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I'd definately say give those yate loons in pull orientation a go first. Not long ago many people used yate loons and probably still do on their watercooling loop. Then if your not convinced by those yates then maybe look into those corsair sp120's.

On another note I totally agree with you that those coolermaster r4's do get very loud at full pelt. They moved an amazing amount of air and in my opinion look ones of the best LED fans out there, nice glow, not too in your face like those apollish fans and such. However at the cost of noise I'd happily go for something like a gentle typhoon or similar.

Thanks for the detailed reply :) One thing I've noticed is that even when plugging the fans into the motherboard instead of the power supply, the R4s STILL RUN AT FULL SPEED. This does not make sense at all...

I've never tried them off the motherboard headers before so can't give you feedback off that account. I used to run them off a lamptron fan controller.

I think the bearing on the fan is'nt that great so it may be that giving you that buzzing sound.

I see...the Yate Loon fans I received are these: http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1cafa1.html

How would they compare to these other fans from Yate Loon:

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=33851&vpn=D12BL-12-UB&manufacture=Yate%20Loon

or the Corsair SP 120s? I know I could just read off the specs but the R4s I'm using now claim to be whisper quite and move 70CFM at 19 decibels which is ridiculous and not true.

Those yates will definately be quieter but as for air pressure I am not too sure. Last time I had them yates was on a Thermalright true many moons ago and they did the job. As for the corsair sp 120's they are very good fans for radiators. I have 6 of the performance editions on my rads and they definately keep my rig nice and cool. I opted for the performance editions and although they perform great they are not silent at full whack. i bought them as I would be putting them on a aquaero fan controller so if needs be on a summer day I could crank them up. Day to day basis as of now they are only on 50 percent even when gaming and they are pretty quiet.

I'd probably say the Corsair's but then also in my mind I also think it may not make too much of a difference in pull. I think there is a thread somewhere on here where someone asked this question too.

Anybody care to enlighten us, correct me on this subject

If I do use the radiator fans in pull, wouldn't that be sucking hot air through the radiator (not sure about this)? Also, if I make the rad fans exhaust, then I will only have ONE intake fan at the front of my case and 1 rear exhaust as well as the 2 radiator exhaust fans. Is this good or bad?

One "good" intake fan should be ok. Make sure it is a good air flow fan. When look at rad fans, CFM doesn't matter. You want good pressure rating. The Yates are supposed to be good fans. Put them into pull and try them out since you have them.

My front intake fan is one of cooler master's silent 120mm blue LED fans, not exactly the best fan for airflow

Pick up a Corsair AF fan then - those are good for air flow.

Well - many times, esp with water cooling you need to sacrifice. :) Do you want quality or bling? Anyways, look at the BitFenix Spectre Pro LED fans

oops I think there's a slight misunderstanding here... I meant I didn't want to use a Corsair AF for front intake :P Because I want an LED fan at the front. I don't care if the radiator fans have LEDs (its unlikely the lighting will be able to penetrate the radiator and light up the case anyway)

As long as you are pulling air from the front/bottom/rear (depending on case 800d example) of the case, through the radiator and into the case it will be fine. The temperature difference from using either push or pull will be near identical.

I'm actually going to be pulling air through the radiator and exhausting it out of the case
