770, 780, 780 Ti. These are a few.

EDIT: Just re-read the title, 770, 290 or a 780 if you can stretch that $400.

That's hardly an upgrade. Seems like pointless to sale a card to move laterally, unless OP wanted to go Nvidia the whole time. I'd say there's no point upgrading from a 280x unless you're going 780 minimum.

On the other hand, I guess moving to a 770 would be the best way to maintain performance while pocketing >$100 for other purposes.

The R9 290 is the absolute most performance you can get out of $400 period.  There are limitations to be sure but as far as most FPS for $400, the 290 is number one.

Really sucks that the price of the R9 290/X have all jumped up by ~$100....price was the best part about it. I would wait it out for them to come down in price as IMO getting a 770 isn't worth you selling your 280X in the first place.

Idk $90 isn't worth it to me considering the 280X you had was also a better card than the 770.

Again just my opinion....It isn't something I would do.

If you can get the R9 280X go that route but they are difficult to find in stock. If you can't find one and don't want to wait then just go with a GTX 770. They are very comparable in performance.

You could get some food with that money.
