No H264 for YouTube

ScratchCat

Previously I have been able to play YouTube videos with minimal CPU load using hardware decoding. However all YouTube videos I now attempt to watch use the AVC1 codec which cannot be decoded by my hardware resulting in a video running at less than 15fps and at a 100% CPU load.

I have attempted to use H264ify to force H264, however that has not succeeded.

AVC1 is H.264. At least that's what the internet is telling me.

Or more specifically, H.264 uses the MPEG-4 AVC codec. Some players use the identifier AVC1.

I got confused between that and Google's new codec AV1 and assumed they had suddenly rolled it out.

Problem was that webrender had been enabled, leading to an issue it seems.

Thank you anyway.

Okay since my post didn't really answer your question, here's a couple of things I can at least provide:

  • Update/reinstall the graphics drivers.
  • Use a video player you know is configured for hardware acceleration and play an H.264 encoded video to see if CPU usage is too high
