RGB led controller: red doesn't work but white does

I recently bought the nxzt hue led controller. Upon opening it, I decided to cycle through all the colours and modes, I noticed that the three leds at the end of the strip were unable to produce red. (when the strip was set to red, the last three would not turn on, when the strip was set to purple, the last three would be blue) However, those same three strips were able to produce a white light identical to all the other leds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that in order to create a white light using rgb, you would need all three colours. How is my situation possible?

Interesting. I think your answer would be inside how the LED's work. The dials may imply that white is a mixture of red green and blue but i doubt that actually the case.
