Queries about Mining Computers

I was talking to someone during a class that I took the other day and they mentioned that they mine cryptocurrency. He showed me pictures of his set up which consisted of 6X 1070’s all set up in his spare bedroom. A few questions have popped into my head after the fact:

 

-What temperatures does rooms with just the mining computer usually experience?

-With a mining motherboard and ultimately mining computer, can you use it for other computations other than mining and folding? I excluded folding since that would be the obvious answer especially in this sub-forum.

-Might be related to the above question, but can you use a mining motherboard as a regular motherboard (i.e. Microsoft office, web surfing, maybe even light gaming)?

 

Any helpful answer is appreciated.

Hot hot hot. You need ample cooling. My room hits 84F if I don't open the windows. It's 65F in the rest of my house. It's just a normal computer with a lot of GPUs. So you could use it for gaming, folding, BOINC, AI, anything you want. Mining motherboards just have a lot of PCIE slots and some have 3 24 Pin power which is nice. But they can do everything a normal PC can

Temps on the mob and cards are a tough question because size of the room what air comes in the room how hot and cold the room gets with out the rig how spaced is hardware out on the rig. But answer yes can do most of what said if it a decent mining rig.

The reason I asked this particular question is because when I was watching the show "Silicon Valley," a character ran their algorithm on their Bitcoin mining computer. I guess "super computers" do run off GPU i.e. Quadros. Thanks for the answers :D

 

Another thing, when I look up "mining motherboard" on Newegg or Amazon, they usually suggests some regular ATX boards with PCIe x8 or x16 slots while dedicated mining boards have mostly PCIe x1. Does that actually matter when it comes to mining since most miners use riser cards and do not have the GPU's directly connected to the board? I feel like I can answer this question by watching the Tech Quickie on PCI Express 3.0 and 4.0, but I'll ask it regardless.

there is actually very little data that is passed through the PCIe bus, so the need for high bandwidth connections plainly doesn't need to exist. That's why 1x risers are utilized, to maximize rig density.

you've got it. Why they haven't integrated CPUs/SOCs yet is beyond me. They would be SO much cheaper to build and maintain... There is one company that makes a flat PCB with 16x connectors and integrated power delivery but it's far from mainstream. the "computer" part of it is simply an add-in card that has an SOC and the whole thing fits in a server chassis.

well the CPU does so little work on a mining rig. i mean it's just basically there to load a program, and route traffic. It doesn't do any computational work. Everything is done by the GPU. Why we need to use a Pentium or a Celeron for such menial tasks is really beyond me. Pins can bend, TIM can dry out, fans can fail, ya gotta buy memory... why not use an SOC (like an Intel Atom) where all of this goes away with the benefit of ultra low power consumption that's basically bullet-proof?

That's actually a great idea. Intel would make a killing if they partnered up with a board manufacturer and sold mining motherboards with these types of chip. Correct me if I'm wroing, but the only issue that I think I am seeing is the PCI lane limits of of such low powered chips. Not enough lanes would mean less cards can be connected to one mining PC.

most folks build 8 card rigs as it is. too many software problems going much larger. considering you only need 8 lanes, and could reallocate a lot of unneeded I/O like limiting usb, no sound and few if any SATA, you could get there.
