GPU not in top slot?

My friend has this motherboard http://a.co/05vtOqc and he had someone install his GPU in the bottom slot.
I had him run unigine heaven benchmark, he has a GTX 1080 and scored around 2400-2500 and I Googled up some other peoples benchmarks and they get around 3000-3100.

Could the problem be that his GPU is installed in the bottom slot?

CPU: i7-7820x

GPU: GTX 1080
RAM: 16 GB

Just having it in a different slot wouldn't make that much(honestly, barely any) difference to the benchmarks you found on google.

Is his card overclocked? cause there's a 99% chance the results you found on google were OC'd :P and that's without factoring in difference in settings.

between the first and second x16 slot there shouldnt be much difference, BUt the last slot gets its lanes from the chipset and probably is only really a x4 slot, so it very well might be reducing performance and introducing a bit of latency

edit: lol just noticed its a x299 board :P 8x is enough but top slot is better

Thanks, I'm gonna see if he can move it to the top.
I tried the default ASUS OC settings in their program and still got the same 2400-2500.

Agreed with previous comments, but I'm trying to figure out just what is going on in there. What is the smaller card in the upper slot? I was wondering if it was a 900p but that's 4x and pics of the mobo show a 1x slot there.

I'm also wondering if the reason the GPU wasn't put in the top slot was because of that CPU cooler, although I can't be sure from these photos. It looks close but I think there is enough room if you wanted to move the GPU to top slot, and whatever that other card is lower down.

The top card is an Elgato capture card.

Looks like whoever installed the graphics card is lazy af. Put the 1080 in the top slot, and the elgato as low as possible. It's just a few screws. Don't worry about the cpu cooler touching the card, it has a backplate. I can't imagine coolermaster would make such a mistake. The first expansion slot is almost always an x1 slot, so that CPU coolers can be wide and proud.

And the difference in the score can be due to higher frequencies, background processes, or even some other software tweaks.
Based on my experience Unigine valley or heaven are not good to compare your card to others. My r9 280x was scoring waaay below everyone else, and I still don't know why. Try the demo version of firestrike instead.
