so i just upgraded my rotuer and i still have my old one which is still a really solid router.  So my theory is that i can plug the old router into my room which is upstairs and plug my PC, and my consoles into it so that they all can have a dedicated hardwired connection without running eithernert cables throughout my house.  Now comes my questions, can this be done?  if i plug the old router in will it begin to start sending out a signal?  i dont want it to, i just wana use it as sort of a bridge so that the devices in my room are all connected via eithernet and not wireless.  If this is even possible to do, then how do i do it?  it would probaly help if i told you what router i would be using.  its the linksys wrt3200acm.  The router that i replaced it with was the linksys velop system.  the old router has 4 eithernet ports which i would assume are some sort of gigabyte ports but i could be wrong.  Proablay dosent even matter since my consoles probaly woudnt even take advantage of the speeds.  But anyways ill stop ramblining and have you guys tell me if this is even possible.  Thanks.  And also would i need to connect the old router into my modem for this to work?

You would have to go in and disable DHCP, WiFi, NAT, and just about everything else but yes, you'll effectively turn it into a switch by disabling the other features and you can do it just fine. The easier/less-complex way would be to buy a 5-port gigabit switch for $30 or so but then you would still have the other router sitting around doing nothing. The router will start broadcasting the old wireless networks when powered on but that can be turned off pretty quickly.

Edit:

I did forget to mention, one of the ports will be labeled WAN, you don't want to use that port but all the others are fair game :)

The 4 ethernet ports work like a switch, so feel free to connect it. The router is a modem + a switch + (probably) a w-lan access point.

You have to run an ethernet cable between the old and the new router. I'd suggest doing this with powerline adapters if you don't have existing cabling

now how would i go about changing those settings without it acually messing up my current network?  and also i would not have to plug the old router into the modem?

Oh! You want to connect the two routers via wireless. I thought you maybe had one wire already run to where you would be plugging the old router in. Let me see if the old router can do wireless bridging without too much hassle.

It won't mess up any settings, just don't connect the old router to your line, use only the LAN ports.

If you're wondering on how to access settings, connect a PC to it and do it the same way you did while using it as the main router.

i currently have my pc set up using a powerline adapter, so i could just take the cable out of my pc and plug it into the WAN port on the router and it would work correct?  or am i missing something

Plug it into the lan port and then disable the features mentioned above. Don't use the WAN port.
