So for the coming year, I have been granted a wish for building a pc.

So far, the parts I am going to get for sure are:

Intel Core i3 7100(Kabylake)

GTX 1050

ASUS h110m-e/m2 m-atx

2x4g of ram

500w power supply

My main concern is that I want to overclock both my cpu and gpu and don't know if 500w ps would be enough.

Specs for the overclock would be helpful.

This is also my first time building a pc and I might need a introduction to oc.

I only know that it makes your cpu and gpu perform better but generates heat.

Thanks in advance!

First off, you shouldn't get Kaby Lake, and only knowing the wattage of the PSU doesn't tell us anything about it.

You can't overclock locked CPUs (like the 7100), and you can't overclock on non-overclocking motherboards.

How far the components will overclock, and how much voltage they'll need will depend on your luck. One 1050 will overclock differently from another 1050.

:)

just for the OP

the 'k' (or 'x') on an intel CPU means it is unlocked and you can overclock

and pretty much only z170 or z270 boards will overclock

The C also means unlocked (and something about the iGPU, think it's an unlocked R CPU, IIRC, only Broadwell got it), and now Intel has come out with XE. The 3820 can also be overclocked, despite not having a letter.

for intel you need a k cpu for mainstream CPUs (7600k, 8700k, etc) and a z series board of compatible chipset (z170/270, z370 respective to cpu example) and psu wattage isn't the important thing, it's the quality that matter (not necessarily determined by rating (bronze, silver, gold) or brand (evga, corsair, seasonic, etc) psu tier list seems to be kept updated, thread is still active at least and you might get help with quality PSUs in your price range there. as for detailed info on overclocking I suggest googling overclocking guide for the cpu generation you intend to overclock on, it will give you the best pertinent info

if there is no way to oc the cpu and mobo, how about the 1050?

and the power usage so my 500w is sufficient?

1050 can OC

the unlocked multiplier in a CPU is necessary, as the motherboard runs at one frequency (usually 100 or 133 Mhz) then the CPU multiplies it by a factor to get the CPU speed

for example 100Mhz FSB (Motherboard) * 48 (cpu multiplier) = 4800 Mhz or 4.8 Ghz (the same OC I am running) 7700k

what is your budget....we can help with possibly a better suggestion

Why 7100? You got it or the mobo for it already?

the "c,k,x"?

What do all these mean?

They are Intel's variations of each generation of CPUs. "Normar", locked CPU comes without any suffix. Overclockable mainstream CPUs have K, Extreme editions have X, low-power models have S or U and so on.

as I said, I am a real beginner builder.

also, any links?

Any links to what? There are tons of videos and written guides on basics of overclocking, overclocking certain components or with certain motherboards. For you selected mobo/CPU there isn't anything as they are non-overclockable. GPU can be overclocked. Best way is to use MSI Afterburner.

Which exact model that is? Probably will be fine, but I wouldn't get noname PSU if you plan to OC with it.
