1440p 60hz or 1080p 144hz

mr anderson

I'm deciding whether to get the C24FG70

or the C27H711

both are from Samsung and both are relatively cheap around $300

the 1440p display does allow for 75hz with free-sync enabled, but it only has a single HDMI port

the 1080p just lacks resolution

its the refresh-rate I'm worried about

would an mini-DP to DP adapter allow for an overclock able refresh-rate on the 1440p panel?

It really depends on what games you play, If you are playing First person shooters, Racing or simulator games then I would take the higher refresh rate. If you play top down games like Factorio, Hearthstone etc, then the extra resolution would be quite useful for productivity outside of games. For the games that I play, I know I would rather have the higher refresh rate.

would there be a deference in color production and sharpnesss?

That would struggle to run a 1440p monitor in demanding games,

im getting an rx 580 8gb

I wouldn't upgrade the monitor with a 650ti. That GPU is old and won't be able to handle 1440p or 144 hz gaming in anything that came out in the past 2-3 years. And the VRAM will definitely be an issue in 1440p.

1440p will look sharper than 1080p but it depends on the monitor size.

As for color if one of those monitor use IPS panel and the other one us TN then the IPS will have better color and viewing angle.

Then get the free-sync monitor.

The 75hz with free-sync will looks way better than 144hz without adaptive sync.

Colour accuracy is comparable across 1080p and 1440p monitors, it really depends on the panel, You can look at its SRGB accuracy to see how accurate its colour reproduction is. IPS panels would be much more accurate than TN panels, but also have the extra cost especially with high frame rate.

As for sharpness, If a game is being rendered at a higher resolution then there is more detail, and it depends on the game whether that is more useful than higher frame rate.

Also something to note if you play games that require quick reactions like CS:GO, then a 144hz monitor will have a much lower response time because it updates twice as fast, This even noticeable even if the game isn't rendering its full refresh rate.

both are VA quantum dot forgot about that they're not TN

Thank you for your help :D

You can get both high refresh rates and 1440p. You can pick up a 27", 1440p 144Hz IPS/VA monitor (LG/Samsung panel), with Freesync, for $300 on Ebay that beats the crap out of any 1080p TN panel. They sell out  really fast there though, especially since the buildapc sub Reddit found out about them, and you may have to wait for another sale, which tend to happen every few weeks.

I just upgraded to a 144hz monitor and I honestly can't tell the difference unless I'm looking at a 60fps/144fps comparison.  It's quite disappointing.  I suggest you try one out first.

Gotta call bullshit unless you can provide a link.  A 580 isn't going to handle that.

This, which is important. There is a  big difference for many in the jump from 60 to 100Hz, but it's most pronounced on IPS/VA panels. Above 100Hz, there is little difference in reality and TN panels especially are disappointing for some who expect a huge difference and better quality, which is just not there often.

Far from bullshit. It's a Crossover monitor. Level1techs do reviews on their range regularly. I buy several of these every year, for myself and clients, and the previous models, both Qnix and Crossover, which include overclockable (120Hz), 27" 1440p panels for $200.  The $200 ones, such as the Qnix QX2710, are much harder to get now though as they sell out even faster than the $300 ones. And yes a 580 handles this resolution just fine most of the time, as does a GXT 1060, though some settings need to be lowered in some games. Realistically though, some games do make much better use of a 1070 or above for the 144Hz refresh rate.

There are people in there saying they got scammed, or that it has a lot of defects.

No more than that have defects on ASUS or other monitors and you're ignoring that the vast majority in that exact thread, who actually own these monitors, have no real defects or problems at all. In fact I couldn't find a single comment there that claimed anyone got scammed who bought one of these, so not sure where you came by that idea. I buy several a year and only ever had one with a dead pixel. And that was the non pixel perfect version, and way off to the far right hand side so it's not even visible unless I actively hunt it down. Linus just did a review of this exact model, so no, not bullshit, no more problems than any other model has, usually less in fact, since you can buy a pixel perfect version, and a great deal that I wish fewer people knew about because it's now going to be harder to get the ones that I buy every year. But hey, if you want to pay more for a shitty TN panel and think it's a good deal, go for it. :)

This is still a 1080p card. Pushing 1440p 60Hz monitor a bit far-fetched and will need reduced settings like high or even medium. As for 1440p 144Hz monitors, better get one with Freesync because the RX 580 wont hit it unless it's some very easy to run games like CSGO
