Hi together,

I am looking forward to upgrade my CPU, motherboard and RAM. Thic PC is focusing on gaming, but I plan to stream a little bit too.

In additional I want to run 2 OS (Win10 Main, Win7 VM) at the same time (VM with GPU passthrough supported by Qemu).

My current build:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 4x 3.40GHz So.1155
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H110
Motherboard: ASUSTeK PZ68-V Pro
Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3-1600 CL9
Storage: Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series 256GB
Storage: Samsung SSD 850 EVO Series 1TB
Video Card:  EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
Case: CM 690 NVIDIA Edition
Power Supply: 750 Watt Corsair CX Series CX750M Modular 80+ Bronze

CPU Cooler and the Video Card should be still fine, thats why I dont change them yet. I dont know if I should add an M.2 SSD?

What I found so far:

CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor

Motherboard: Asus - ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3466 Memory

But I am not really sure with those parts. I really dont know much about hardware. I just read some threads and watched some vids on yt.

decent upgrade for cpu and mobo would bring that dinosaur huge gains just in that front

and m.2 imo is strictly preference yes its fast by a large margin compared to SSDs but youll  hardly notice any difference

M.2 is more for clearing up cables in your system or having more room for HD while still having an SSD

you get the same performance buying 2 250GB SSDs for the same or cheaper or just slightly more than a single 250 m.2

but in the end its so worth watching file transfer at 1GBs between my raided SSDs and my M.2 then spike to 2GBs the other way around

if your storing alot of stuff on the SSD since its for gaming id recommend a 1-2tb HDD or external drive just for pictures and videos and important stuff and if you still feel short on storage with all the games plop and M.2 for your OS
etter than getting more sata cables

2600k is still very capable. Hardware Unboxed just benched it against 8700k and held it's ground well.

Honestly I would hold out until Ryzen+ releases in 2 months and then re-evaluate your options. You have a great setup right now.

I would hold off upgrading until next year.  The 2600K is pretty good as long as you have it overclocked past 4GHz.
