I currently have windows 8.1 pro installed on my computer, but because it is a cloned copy, it is no longer activated. The other storage devices is in use in another computer so using it wouldn't be an option. My only choices now would be to buy a licence for windows 8 or you know...Can't stand that "Activated Windows now" B.S anymore.

Options

1) buy this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416779, Problem is that I don't know if the key will work in activating windows 8.1 pro or if it is only for an upgrade to windows 8.1 pro...which is what i have installed.

2)Use the re-installation disc that came with my laptop about 4 years ago and buy this, http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.264954100 , my windows 7 will have the build error but i know it works cause it is what i origally did when i got windows 8 pro for $15 bucks *now 70*. but even though it's cheaper I'm just too lazy....

Anyway, anyone know if the product upgrade key from newegg will work? It'll save me the hassle. Unless anyone has a windows 8.1 pro key they don't want.

It's easy enough to activate Windows with an upgrade key, so go for it if that's the cheapest you can get it.

But will the upgrade work if I'm buying an upgrade key for something I have?

Pretty sure.  You basically just put in the key in Windows, change a registry value, restart, and you're done.  You don't need to reinstall or anything.

Also, I'm assuming you don't have access to Dreamspark?  Maybe you can figure out how to get access from your school's IT department or something.

Wait, you don't get free Windows from Dreamspark?  Hmm, I guess your school doesn't have the full subscription package or something.

You should be able to activate it since it says it needs windows 8.1:

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
If you were running Windows 8.1, your PC will restart automatically and Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center will be available for use.

To install Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, you must be running Windows 8.1. Internet access fees may apply. Prices shown are estimated retail prices; actual price may vary. Additional hardware may be required to watch and record live TV with Windows Media Center. If you purchase a new PC with an addition of Windows 8.1 preinstalled and you later upgrade that PC with Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, Windows 8 Media Center Pack, a volume license edition, or a retail edition, you will no longer be able to install apps that are provided exclusively from your PC manufacturer through the Windows Store.

Why not buy OEM? It's way cheaper and exactly the same.

Examples of such features supported by the Enterprise edition include things like AppLocker for application lock-down, which prevents end users from installing some software on devices. Another Enterprise-supported feature will be application sideloading, which is a way for organizations to push software out to end users and manage the distribution.

Microsoft's embedded OSes are a bit different from their desktop cousins. The embedded OSes don't have all of the functionality of the desktop OSes, but they do have some added capabilities specific to the specialized device world, such as keyboard, write and gesture filters.

I would just get Regular Pro if they have it since you won't be using the features in industry pro imo because this is intended for things like ATMs and healthcare systems.

You can do that with OEM keys too :) Re enter it, or just call and get it reactivated.

both drives are being used

Thats not the issue if there both being used. The issue will be if your trying to use that one product key on two PCs. If you just closed the drive to anew one then popped it into another PC this is easily resolved. Now if you are indeed trying to use the same product key on two PCs you kinda walked into this situation.
