Video Surveillance?

Just curious if it is reasonable to use a server for video surveillance.  What kind of equipment would I be looking at? Would want 4 outdoor camera's that will be under an overhang.  I have plenty of hdd space so I'd assume some kind of interface and software.

You don't need server grade hardware, as the processing isn't that difficult.  My 6 camera CCTV system runs off of an old Dell Inspiron 530 with 10tb of HDD's jammed inside.  

 

I'm running Zoneminder (free, open source surveillance software), which can use IP cameras, USB cameras, and Coaxial cameras (if you have a proper multichannel capture card).  It can do it all.
