Second hand calibration tool?

Hi all

 

To save some cash I was considering a second hand calibration tool from Spyder or xRite.  Is this a bad idea?  I can't figure out if they need a unique serial code or not for making a basic profile.  If so, am I just buying an expensive paperweight. 

 

I had hoped to calibrate my screens and sell it on again.

If you use something like DisplayCAL, you can just plug it in, install the necessary drivers and it will work fine. I have sold a couple Spyder 5s myself and I didn't get any complaints that it didn't work.
