Looking for a CPU Limiter program

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

Set Affinity is to dedicated a program to a or some cores.

Set Priority, adjust the scheduling of Windows to give the program greater or lower priority when it gets to it, to give a moment to do it's work. Reduce the priority will reduce the program performance, obviously.

Some program don't play nice when you change either of the above, so try and see. but normally it's not a problem.

And yes, you need to redefine it, every time you start it up. You could find programs that auto set the above settings for you, but if the program define itself at startup, then it won't be of any use, you'll need to do it by hand.

So i am having an issue when using the program Air Playit and the CPU usage of it.

Basically what the program does is compresses the videos stored on my computer and sends them out to other devices on the network for playback. The problem that I face with this program is that it eats CPU usage causing sudden frame drops in many games.

I am looking for either an alternative program to Air Playit that I can use to stream to mainly mobile devices on my network that isn't so heavy on the CPU and maybe streams the full files as they are not too large (can be streamed uncompressed over wifi) and it must have apple and android support.

OR a program that allows me to CPU limit certain programs so that rather then it using 100% of my CPU over 5 seconds it perhaps uses 20% over 25 seconds for the same effect.

What do you guys recommend? Do you stream media to your devices and what program do you use to do so?

I would not recommend limiting the cpu for the program because the reason it uses so much cpu is usually because it needs so much to stream the videos seamless, i really don't even know weather this is possible easily. I would probably suggest you maybe building a small home server from old parts or something, because streaming on the network and stuff can really stress the cpu and limit your experience on the computer...

but maybe for a cheaper solution you could try to get a better cooler for your cpu and overcloock it a little bit more.

I think you can set priorities to processes inside task manager. Setting Air Playit to small priority or if you have multicore cpu, set it to run on certain core only might solve this the easy way.

I believe the above poster is referring to affinitys which can be set inside of task manager
