So essentially I need help picking a audio/mic set up. I am a gamer spend tons of time gaming on skype with friends and want a great gaming experience and for that I thought I'd pick up some astro a40s but then I found out the mic quality isn't so great and recently I've been doing alot of music recording with a YouTube artist friend I play guitar for so it made me think why not just get a yeti or at2020 as well.

But now I'm here because I love this forum and i know you will be able to advise me best since now I could also just get a good pair of headphones and then a mic instead of astros and a mic. So please suggest away with reasons as to why.

Goals:

Gaming

Recording

Quality!

Where I work I get alot of these products on discount so take the astros plus a yeti being around 400 total I think full price as a budget :)

Thanks everyone!

I have the yeti and it is a good mic for the money. Get one and a decent pair of headphones.

Well you should definately go with separate headphones and mic.

Something designed to do both is never going to be as good at one thing as something designed specifically for one purpose. (Hopefully that made sense).

For example, a smart phone camera will never be as good as a dedicated camera, because the main focus of the product is being a phone.

That's a terrible example, but the best I could think of in this tired state.

I would grab a pair of ATH-M50s and then a decent mic.

I don't know mics that well so you'll have to let someone who knows what they're talking about recommend a mic.

Hope this helps :)

Headphone and DAC come recommended in the *Stickied* audio pre-answered guide in the audio subforum

Id reccomend picking up a pair of sennheiser 558's or 598's with a zalman clip on mic (http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ)

The mic is four dollars and easily demolishes any other "Gaming" brand headsets paired with one of these headphone options. Basically the main difference between the two headphones i named is that the 558's have a little more bass but 598's have a crisper overall sound. If you have the extra money id say go for the 598's but in all it really depends on preference.

What would be recommendations for headphones equal to a40s in both gaming and general audio?

Maybe the Superlux HD 681.
