Internet Speed

Hey, guys, I lived in Portugal until about three months ago, and back there, I had a 215mbps through a fibre-to-the-home setup, and now that I moved into a different country, my current speed is about 14-17mbps on a 20mbps package. Two days ago, I called my ISP regarding an upgrade, and in the middle of the conversation, I mentioned I was getting 17 (best case scenario) on my 20mbps and that I understood that the advertised 20mbps were not guaranteed, however, the guy said I actually should be getting the 20mbps or like 19.9mbps because that's what the router was getting, which I confirmed (see screenshot in spoiler) and that I wasn't getting the speed I should due to some setting I needed to change (he didn't specify, he simply said I should mess with it). I'm using a Belkin router, what settings should I look into in order to get the 20mbps that the router is receiving to my desktop? I included a screenshot of a speed test I just performed (see spoiler).

Not sure what europeans would do, but from a north american perspective there's nothing wrong with that. The ISPs usually advertise an "up to" speed, but they're not actually forced to provide that speed at all times.

 

If this were in NA, I'd honestly be pretty happy with the performance I got.

Read the whole post. I completely understand that, but the guy from the ISP said that I should be getting the 20mbps because the router was getting it.

Forgot to mention that. I'm using ethernet.

A cheap cable could cause degradation are you using a decent cable? Are you connected directly into the router or passthrough on a switch

Not necessarily. You need to factor in the distance to the SpeedTest.net server, the # of hops to the server, the quality of the network in between and what sort of hardware it is transiting through, etc. Honestly, 14-17Mbps (1.8MB/s to 2.1MB/s) is an excellent speed for ADSL. I wish that sort of speed was consistent here in Australia.

 

Also, the down/uplink speeds you see in your router are typically to your carrier's Digital Subscriber Line Access Modules (DSLAMs) in your local telephone exchange, not to the public internet. This is because you can test to many different speedtest servers and get many different results. I can almost guarantee you that if you tested to an Australian server, you would get (roughly) 5-10Mbps if you are lucky, with a latency of no lower than 120ms.

thats within spec, you're getting what you are supposed to be getting. there is nothing wrong here.
