Can't output to hdmi

So for some reason my PC won't output to my TV using a hdmi lead, it works fine using my dvi to vga cable but whenever i play any games ()like destiny 2 for example) it will constant stutter. I've narrored it down so that i know its a problem using a vga connector on the back of my TV and if i can get it to connect using hdmi then it should work fine because it has in the past. Whenever i use the hdmi lead my PC will start to boot and it will start to display the normal startup stuff, but as soon as it's supposed display my user screen it just blacks out for no reason. I'm running an R9 fury on AMDs lastest drivers. thanks
