Intel Rapid Storage Technology necessary?

StormEye

I have updated my system last night and installed all (well, not everything) "seemingly" necessary drivers and utilities for a new system/motherboard.

One thing I noticed is that when Intel Rapid Storage Technology is installed all SATA ports are operating at 1.5G when I check with Samsung Magician.

Once IRST is uninstalled, Samsung Magician shows full 6.0G.

Just wondering whether IRST is something that is necessary or something I can ignore entirely.

Intel RST is used for SSD caching. If you don't have an SSD set up as a cache for an HDD (or another SSD, whatever) then you don't need it. Shouldn't make SATA ports run at 1.5Gbps though, never heard of that before.

Ya, its weird. I never had this experience for my past builds, so never really paid attention to IRST until now.

I guess I am good without it as I don't do SSD caching.
