CPU choice for gaming/editing rig

Go to solution Solved by dragoon20005,

the R5 1600 has 12 treads over the i5 6 treads

in terms of video editing

that may make a lot of difference in rendering videos

Hey guys
gonna be building a friends pc soon, if it was going to be used just for gaming i wouldn't have any issues picking a cpu however he will also be editing videos so i'm kind of stumped as to what cpu to pick for him. he has a budget for the whole pc of $1000 (AUD) so im thinking about either the i5 8400 or the R5 1600 with the R5 being $10 more. i know the I5 is better in terms of gaming but ive heard that Ryzen is overall better for multitasking.
Helpful input would be greatly appreciated.

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

so i take it, its the better overall performer for editing?

depends on the program, adobe will prefer coffee lake over ryzen.

get the 1600, better multi core perf, while being on a platform that will be supported for much longer

good to hear ive locked that one in. Do you think the GTX 1060 6gb would be a good pairing? (i'm a lot more knowledgeable with older gen cards and cpu's i really haven't looked into the new ones much) i figure for the price it gets him within a price point he can afford while giving good performance and features like Nvidia shadowplay for recording.
Also its been a while since i built my Ryzen rig which was when it was first released and there was alot of issues back then with ram compatibility with ryzen however mine worked fine with ram not on the QVL. Can you use any ddr4 now? i know that Ryzen peforms better with faster ram so i was thinking TEAM TDGED416G3000HC15ADC01 (2x8gb 3000)
