If you just want to use it is a storage server than you can use whatever version of windows is currently on it, or you could use something like FreeNAS. There's no need to buy Windows Server unless there's some specific feature you need.

P.s. if you intend to use this long term (and you pay for electricity), then get new hardware, the FX8320 and 270x is going to burn through electricity.

Of course, the name pretty much gives it away. I personally use a stock lubuntu linux install with the programs and services I need installed on it, but that's probably a bit steep for someone just getting into servers.

I'd recommend trying out freenas aswell like djdwosk97 mentioned, if you need help with it there's several videos on youtube and the LTT forums here.

It's completely blown out of proportion. Using an OS like FreeNAS is probably going to work out more easily. Is "Windows Server 20xx Worth it?" Maybe, depends on what version you are talking about. 2012R2 and 2016 are good. Anything older than that isn't worth setting up when there is free and open source options like FreeNAS available.

Or just create file shares in your existing Windows installation :P

No need to learn a different operating system for just sharing some files. Also, ditch that video card for like a GT210 or whatever and run the CPU at lowest clocks all the time. Should be pretty efficient then.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro
