The 8700K doesn't come with a stock cooler, so unless you have one you'll need to make room for that.

8700 + asus z370 motherboard  MCE + stock cooler with = 4.6ghz 24/7

8700K + z370 motherboard + good cooling = 5ghz 24/7

Gonna take a guess you meant something more like this:

8700 + z370 motherboard + stock cooler with = 4.6ghz 24/7

8700K + Asus z370 motherboard + good cooling = 5ghz 24/7

:)

an 8700 will save you some money over the 8700k, but you HAVE to buy a Z series motherboard that supports overclocking so it's not worth saving the money for the non-K.

ultimately it depends what you need the computer to do, there are plenty of cheaper options if you don't NEED the higher end stuff.

Go with the i7 8700, I had both an i7 8700k at 5ghz and and now the i7 8700, quite frankly both are pretty much identical and better than the i5 8600k regardless, not worth the high spend of the unlocked one.

Check it out, already set the time, for all purposes a stock i7 8700k is an i7 8700 since their all core turbo is identical:

Actually overclocking ram from 2666mhz to 3200mhz provides greater raw fps gain than overclocking the CPU from 4.6ghz to 5ghz, the Z chipset is still justified if you'll pair it with the right RAM.
