Ok, so I was contemplating what I was going to do with my mobile set up next year, and I think I'm going to try whatever is released as a KeyOne successor.

Now, that unfortunately means that content consumption won't be as nice. I usually hold my phone and use it to browse while I'm sitting by the computer and have other things on the go, am watching TV, etc. I have an 8" tablet but I find that it's a little too large. I looked around (albeit briefly) and it seems like premium 7" tablets are all but gone, and the smaller sizes are still 4:3 instead of 16:9 so they're wider than I'd be wanting.

Are there any small premium tablets?

I was also considering just getting a phone and using that instead. The downside being most will likely have worse battery life unless I get a higher end model.

ROM support would be cool, especially if they run an older version of Android. I won't tinker with that stuff for a daily driver, but I wouldn't mind playing with it for something like this.

These are the phones I was considering if I go that route:

  • Honor Note 8/9
Unsure of the price of the 9, so this one is rather unlikely. I see it being $600+
Not many reviews on the 8. No Nougat.
  • Asus Zenfone 3 Max
Haven't been able to find this one particularly cheap either, but as it's getting older I'm hoping prices drop accordingly.
  • Gionee Mi6s Plus
Don't know much about this one. Likely only considered if ROM support is present.
  • Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro
Again, on the pricey side, but likely one of the best of the bunch.
  • Xiaomi Mi Max 2
This one looks like a solid winner. New, Nougat, massive battery, second biggest screen, power sipping chip.

If you have any other device suggestions, these are my requirements:

  • Preferably a 6"+ screen
  • Huge battery
  • Android
  • WiFi, preferably dual band
  • MicroSD card would be a huge plus
  • Headphone jack not required, camera doesn't matter

S7 Edge if you can get it for a good price. Oneplus 5t, Axon 7, honor 8.

The S7 Edge and Axon 7 are both too small in the screen department.

I'm not the hugest fan of OnePlus tbh. Screen's also a little on the smaller side.

I was thinking about the Honor 8, but there isn't a decent battery life review on GSMArena.

Ah, sorry I was thinking the Honor Note 8.

5.7" is still a little on the small size. I used a Note5 for a year and it was nice, but if I was getting something that's staying at home I don't mind it losing a little portability.

The A7 2017 is 5.7".

Hahah, that thing is a behemoth :P I bought a 10.1" tablet at the same time as my 8", and quickly sold it after I held it for a few seconds. Just wasn't comfortable at all.

Will happily recommend the Mi Max 2

Currently rocking the Redmi Note 4X and it hadn't skipped a beat and the SoT while web browsing and consuming content is often 7+h on a single charge.

Yeah the phone I have now has the SD625 and it's a beast. Gets 10+ hours of SoT over 3 days between charges.

How does your Redmi perform when it comes to stand by time?

My Asus only loses a couple of percent (if that) overnight.

Mi Max 2 is hard to beat, especially at its price. Because you'll want whatever device you get to last.

To last long means big battery, a screen that won't burn in, and enough popularity for a strong community and custom rom support. The low price also means if you hardbrick the thing you don't lose as much money. In time they will release a better Mi Max 3 which if you buy, you probs still spent less in total compared to a single expensive phablet.

Huawei devices have great specs but unfortunately they use proprietary Kirin SoC that barely has any following in the mod community.

Yeah I was thinking about it last night and I think the Mi Max route makes the most sense. I can throw a SIM in it and have a business texting line as well.

Is the ROM support pretty good for the MI Max?
