Is a DRAM-less SSD an issue on a games SSD?

  • Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz
  • 16 GB DDR4-3000
  • Samsung 850 EVO (250 GB) (released late-2014)
  • SanDisk Plus (240 GB) (released mid-2016)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
  • Microsoft Windows 10

Linus posted the 'What Are DRAM-less SSDs?' video on YouTube yesterday.

I researched my two SSDs a little afterward, as I had no idea about DRAM on SSDs when I purchased them.

It turns out my boot drive (the Samsung) has a 512 MB cache. All is good.

However, my second SSD (the SanDisk), which I only use for Steam and Steam games, has no cache (that I know of).

As I only use this for loading games (and not lots of smaller read/writes), do you think will this affect me much?

From what I understand, you may not see the difference in normal gaming. If you go to competitive gaming, that might be another story.

It will take a bit longer to load (still better than an HDD) but will not affect any in game performance.

From Linus point of view, the big objection to the drive is slower access to the info on the drive, and the life expectation of the drive itself.

Don`t even think about the difference. It`s not worth the aggravation.

So far, they're both reporting 100% health.

An SSD is never going to make any difference in competitive gaming.
