Home cloud server

Is that not the similar if not the same as to setting up just a regular home server in RAID and allowing some sort of online interface ie ftp? Point of cloud server is that they have redundancies so you don't lose data...which is essentially RAID and backups? I could be completely wrong but I say set up a RAID at home an do backups if needed and give it FTP access?
