overclocking a non k cpu?

so i have the i7 6700 and just wanted to ask if you can overclokc it. a friend told me you could get a older version of your bios and then overclock it.

It's then patched and some say even with old BIOS, Windows 10 doesnt recognize the overclock.

I wouldn't try it. You'd more than likely have even the slightest change and lose all stability of your cpu if it even is still possible.

I'm wondering why you have a watercooler and an expensive z170 motherboard for a locked cpu?

It is a thing. Look up "non k overclocking". You need a suitable bios to enable it, which might mean a 3rd party hacked one with the risks that brings. Also it breaks some CPU features. AVX only works at a very low speed, and per-core temp monitoring is not possible. On the plus side, with Z170 boards at least the CPU fsb and bus for other things are decoupled, so you're only really OCing the CPU. You can get similar speeds as a k OC. 

 

When I tried it earleir this year with an i3- 6100, it seemed to work initially but after a crash/reboot I couldn't get it working again. There is concern that MS implemented a software loaded ME update that might be hindering it, and I wasn't motivated enough to install an unpatched OS install to check if that was the case.

speaking from experience i did it and you can literally only go up 100mhz and there is a 5cb points extra in cine bench and no change on single core .........its useless and my board is part of the high range and the vrm are boiling hot

You're missing something there. Did you have a bios that had unlocked bus OC? My i3-6100 I had running at 4.7 GHz (stock is 3.7 GHz) on a crappy MSI mobo.

That's an older generation. In recent times, non-k overclocking was only on some Skylake system.

Asrock had their Hyper H270 series that allowed overclocking using the BCLK... but I dont think they sell it anymore.

back when i build it(almost 2 years ago) i did not know that much about pc's like i do now. and the 7700k wasnt out yet. and as i said i did not know the difference between k and non k.
