Boot takes twice as long with HDD's

Walt

Hi everyone,

I had a problem a while ago that my system took twice as long to boot. (From 10s to 20s) When I unplugg both my hdd's there is no problem and it boots normally. People told me that it is because I use a m.2 SSD and a windows update had been downloaded to the first SATA port it saw (my hdd). But I don't think this is true because I'm using my system for about 2 months without the hdd's and I've seen nothing weird. What could be the solution?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

does it take longer to go past the bios? make sure your boot order is set correctly. or else it wil spin up the hdd's first, look for an os on them, realize it isn't there and then boot to windows from the ssd.

Profile your boot, their are free programs out there for it, I have a great one I use but I can't post a public link for it due to licensing issues, PM if you still can't figure it out in a few days.

Edit I just fully read and comprehended your post and it does sound like a boot priory issue and not Windows, but if it is Windows a good boot profile will let you knoe, keep in mind the time you get will seem allot higher because it accounts for when all background and indexing service finish, not just when your at your desktop and it seems normal without looking under the hood.

Couple of questions;

  • Where your HDD internal or external?
  • What is your boot order in your bios?

I have as boot order:

1.  UEFI hard disk samsung 960 evo

2. USB media

Could it be something that UEFI searched for all the disks?

I changed it to:

1. Hard disk samsung 960 evo

2. USB media

This did not boot.

- All my hdd's have a 200MB 'healthy EFI System Partition' (also random external ones). I never see someone with this, what could it be?

- The blackscreen after the bios and windows load screen is mainly longer

- The hdd's were internal but external has the same problem

boot order was correct before you changed it, if its not set to UEFI it will try legacy boot from the drive first not UEFI

Yeah removing UEFI will do that.

That makes absolutely no sense ...

I would back up your HDD's files, > format > re-install > then boot and see what happens.

At this point I would say your HDD's are the issue since removing them removes the problem.

They thought it because the hdd’s have 200mb efi system partition each. Later I saw that every HDD I plug in has this. Does your hdd’s have this?

I will try it first with some other hdd’s I have laying around.

Thanks!

I am not sure if the hdd’s are the problem because I have it with every HDD.
