Hi LTT Community,

I got this idea of using Old Server hardware that one can buy on eBay to build my own NAS. I saw the video on the LTT channel from 3 weeks ago where Linus builds a computer from an Old Server motherboard and used 4 CPUs. I want to do something like that. I might not need 4 CPUs for a NAS.

Also, I would want to be able to fit it into a Server Rack Mount Case.

Any my help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

A nas needs almost no cpu power at all. If you are just using it as a network storage device even a single core atom is more than enough.

You can of course do much more with a network pc than it just being a nas like I do by letting it do auto backups of every pc. Then also storing it on a mirrored disk that is 2x as large since it holds a file history and then do a cloudbackup to backblaze.

Cool so this is kinda overkill unless I want to use it for something else.

If I am only going to use it for a NAS, what parts do you recommend? I want to place it in a  rack mount case.

If I do get a more powerful PC with used Server parts, what else can I use it for?

If you go new. An intel celeron + cheap b250 board and 4gb of ram and a decent 350w psu will do. Then put whatever storage space you want in it. Do note that if you go raid RAID 1 IS NOT A BACKUP. It's a mirror and if one drive has a defect it can erase the other.

Used it's pretty much the same situation. Get some decent low power hardware. No need for server parts since you aren't doing anything special.
