I did, probably one of the better choices I made in my first build. Got a boost to 1866Mhz from 1333Mhz. Didn't play with the timings or voltage, I just wanted a clock speed boost.

You have the xmp profiles which are "overclocked" and if you don't have an xmp profile on your ram or you want to get faster speeds, you'll have to fiddle with speed, timings, and voltage. For me personally, I have corsair vengeance running 3000MHz, however, I was able to squeeze out an extra 200MHz without editing any timing or voltage. I'm sure I could go higher if I increased the CAS latency and increased voltage but I'm lazy.

 

Is there a reason to overclocking your ram? In terms of performance increases, whether or not spending that time editing CAS timings, voltage, and benchmarking is worth that increase in performance is really up to you.

Looking at your specs, you can't overclock your RAM. It's restricted to Z170/Z270 (on your socket), and those two chipsets do not support ddr3.

Overclocking is increasing the "clock speed", which is how fast it updates.

ddr3 on skylake... I feel like that's bad? 

 

According to an article written by Usman on WCCFTech, using ddr3 memory on skylake (I would assume the same for kabylake) can damage the IMC (aka the memory controller) if you do use ddr3 ram for a long time. I guess that would explain why your ram is running so slow, as ddr3 needs to be underclocked so that it can operate at safe voltages and not damage the IMC on the skylake chips

You can BCLK the CPU, but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend that though.

 

It's not supposed to be able to overclock unless it's Z170 or Z270.

So, if you're using ddr3l, then you will be fine as ddr3l's voltage is around 1.35V. However, it's not recommended to run ddr3 memory modules as ddr3 isn't as energy efficient, so their stock voltage is usually around 1.5V vs ddr4, which runs at around 1.2V and can go up to around 1.35V for overclocking. If you wanted to read more about it, there are articles online that can put the issue in more detail. 

 

Again, if your memory module is ddr3l, then you are completely fine and don't have to worry about what I just said. It's just ddr3 modules only.
