Compatability

I've recently taken up digital imaging as a way to grab some quick cash and I do some rendering on the side for a mates youtube channel, so I'm stepping up my game with a new processor. I ran into a new website yesterday and when I dropped the new motherboard and the new processor into my current config, it said that I had a conflict with two of my parts, the HDD and the new motherboard. I checked and the two parts and they should be good to the extent of my knoledge, but I wanted to check in here before I finalized my order. Thanks! Rob.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't an r7 1700 and a Samsung 960 pro be a better option for this particular use case. the extra cores and threads would improve render times, and the 960pro would improve overall project loading. Also ram can easily be overclocked, and with the ram market right now that might be the better price to performance option.

You're 100% correct, but let me add one thing. I can upgrade ram or my ssd year round, but I can't drop $650 on a new cpu and motherboard in a few months.

true, however with price inflation currently of the coffee lake cpus, and the am4 socket being supported until 2020 I see the amd platform as the better value overall. I also have some unfounded concern that the lga 1151 v2 may not get a second generation of cpu.

So, staying on the Intel side of things, what is your personal recommendation?

Id say you have two options. What you have listed above is a great set up, no need to pay extra for faster ram if your comfortable overclocking. the only issue I have with it is that you are getting hosed on price due to supply chain limitations. your second option would be to go full overkill and jump up to the lga 2066 platform and get a i7 7820k. This is will add 200 - 250 more to the build, but you stick with intel and are basically guaranteed another generation of CPU on the platform. This becomes a little more reasonable if you live near a micro center as they have the CPu listed for $100 less than newegg if you pick up in store. The 2066 platform also give more options for upgrading to higher core count CPUs in the future as well as additional PCIe lanes for nvme drives and other PCIe devices.

I can't afford to go the rout with lga 2066 unless I get an i7 7800k (at that point I might as well keep my motherboard I have now, and get an 17 7700k because I can get another year out of my current board), so I might stick with the chip above as I cant see myself upgrading for another 3-4 years after this.

What CPU and Mobo do you currently have? A 7700k is a fantastic chip, and you might be able to get a sweet deal on it between now and the end of the year.

i5 6500 and M5A99FX Pro R2.0 (lga 1151), but I want the extra cores and threads with the 8th generation chips.

I would get the 7700k at the sub $300 US on newegg and then look back into upgrading this time next year or even into spring 2019. Unless you start getting super crazy with your editing the 7700k should do a fine job. Also as Intel doesn't rely as heavily on ram speed stick with what you have for the time being too, hopefully when you come back to upgrade next year the DRAM shortage will have resolved and prices will be more reasonable.
