Hey new to this page but after some advice. Money isn't a issue but willing to spend money on a decent triple use system I'm planing on getting a threadripper 1950x 16 core cpu but I'm unsorted how to go about what I want. I want to use 2 cores to run the vmware on primary system then create a vm system for misses she does designing an ant to give her 6cores or 12 threads for herself on windows 10. And for myself I want to dedicate the same to myself as I do cad work and gaming as well as movies etc. Then another 2 core to another vmware operating system for a Nas I plan on using a ssd each for me and misses and 4 Seagate 2tb drives for raid for server. I'll put 32gb or ram in maybe 64 if needed and I'd like a gtx 1080ti for myself and a gtx 1070 for misses. Now can anyone shed some light if I'll have enough pci lanes and even if the vmware is capable to achieve what I'd like to do I know it will b expensive but if I was to buy 2 systems and a good Nas I'd be spending 4-5k anyways a ND being in 1case would b a cool

Any help would much be great full

Only problem I see is that you can't use the free version of VMware. You'd have to get it licensed. You may be better off going with something like unRAID as it would be a better value, plus you'd have a lifetime license instead of a renewing yearly license.

Sorted list, because that's a wall of mashed-in text.

CPU

  • 2 Cores for Host PC.
  • 2 Cores for NAS.
  • 6 Cores for the Missus* to do Design Work
  • 6 Cores for You (Gaming, CAD)

^^ Did I get that right?

Storage:

  • 4x 2TB 7200RPM Storage Drives.
  • 2x SSD's for main booting etc.

GPU:

  • GTX 1070 for the Missus*
  • GTX 1080ti for you.

So, to directly answer your question. Will you have enough PCI-E lanes? Your 1070 and 1080ti will take up 32 lanes in total (Assuming (2x (x16))
SSD's: Can't answer this as stands. What kind of SSD's do you want? SATA 6GB/s? NVMe? PCI-E? M.2?

But, I would think you'd have enough.

You may want to look at Linus' video entitled "2 Gaming Rigs, 1 Tower - Virtualized Gaming Build Log":

Side Note: Misses means to miss something. I missed the taxi. Missus refers to your Wife/Fiancé.

Yes, this is possible with VMWare ESXi (not workstation) but not on AMD as threadripper is not supported yet, not with SMT enabled at least. You'll have to get a 16-core Xeon or i9 to distribute the cores and threads to your liking. You can pass through various cards to the VMs but you might need to change a setting to get it working properly:

PCIe lanes won't be an issue, as Threadripper has 64 and the Intel equivalents have 44. GPUs can run full speed on 8x links anyway.

Thank you  for simplifying everything. I want m.2 nvme like Samsung Evo 960. I looked at unraid but never used it. Only ever used vmware, I'm OK with buying a licence providing I can run 2 vm but I'm unshore yet how to build the Nas side of it I've seen a couple of videos but nothing on the scale and in 1 system.

It will be split up and used as

1. Missus* lol work storage(documents,  accounts, templates,  photos etc)

2.plex server / storage (movies,  music, family photos,  personal stuff)

3. Camera feed video storage

4.my work/game storage cad ect

So you recommend a xeon chip or i9. What xeon would have 16threads that won't cost a kidney lol I liked threadripper due to being 1k rather 2plus with xeon. I've just bought 4 western digital 4tb Nas drives and Samsung 256gb Evo ssd for boot drive and 2 512gb nvme Samsung 950m.2. Not getting gpu till I find a Christmas sale might save some money as they will burn a nice hole in pocket alone
