My parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Tv4dpb

Needs: Casual gaming and programming. Generally plays AAA games like Wolfenstein 2, GTA 5, Watchdogs 2 etc during the weekends and spends most of the time during weekdays programming, running VM's and watching movies. No streaming or video rendering.

Also I am currently using a 24'' S2417NX monitor and was wondering to move to Acer GN276HL since it has a good deal going on. Should I look for 1080p 144hz or 1440p 60hz monitor for my needs? People I spoke to have said that 144hz would feel better.

I was initiallly going for the GTX 1080 but after researching a little bit, I found out that, the i5 7500 would bottleneck the gtx 1080. Hence moved to GTX 1070. I do not want to drop down to GTX 1060 since I won't be upgrading this build frequently. Do you think that is a good decision considering the fact that I would be gaming on 1080p or should I spend $200 more and get a better cpu and gtx 1080 right away.?

Thank you for your help.

I'd suggest an i5-8400 or ryzen 5 1600, your getting 50% more cores without sacrficing gaming performance. The i5-8400 does do slightly better then the R5 1600 when it comes to gaming, but it does lack hyperthreading which is nothing to worry about from a performance stand point.

Definetly go Ryzen 1600 over that i5, extra cores will help you in programming without sacrificing gaming performance.

I would not program while gaming. I searched that the ryzen 5 really helps at multi tasking and helping people with multi-threaded workloads. I would not be multi-tasking while gaming. Also by looking online, I found that intel i5 currently produce more FPS compared to ryzen. This is the reason I was thinking of sticking to intel.

The i5 does do slightly better then the Ryzen chip when it comes to gaming, and if your not multitasking, the 6 cores and 6 threads should be enough for your use case.

6 core Ryzen is cheaper than 6 core Intel thanks to the expensive Z370 mobo, so Ryzen it is. Improvement in graphics card plays a far important role when it comes to games.

smaller SSD and added a HDD. Keep in mind that when SSDs die they take every bit of data in it with them. With an HDD as long as the damage isnt to the disk itself, it is recoverable. Also HDDs are more durable to SSD against read and write wear so they last longer.

1070ti is 95% of a 1080. No reason not to get that when it costs noticeably less

This PSU can do the job fine at half the price.

really doubt i5 7500 out perform ryzen 5 by much if not performs worse. Since the new coffeelake cpu and motherboard are so expensive, i suggest buy other parts while they are on sale now, wait till next year when coffeelake cpu supply is better and when they drop cheaper mbs such as H370 B360 chipsets. i5 7500 is definitely not recomanded since theres almost no upgrade path and the CPU performance is no good.

Thank you everyone for your quick very informative replied. Thank you @Jurrunio for giving me a sample build. I would go through it and makes any tweaks if needed since I can squeeze a bit a cash if needed. What do you guys think about the monitor? I use a Dell S4217NX which has a IPS panel and edge to edge display which I absolutely love. Since I cannot afford a G-Sync monitor right now. Either I have to stay with the one I have or move to 27'' one. I was wondering if I should move to 2K @ 60hz or 1080p @144hz and also at what screen size.
