Is mining safe?

After seeing Linus's and Austin Evan's videos about cryptoming, I thought I would give it a try. I have a year old prebuilt PC with a GTX 1060 3GB so I assumed it would be profitable. But, when I asked my dad if I could, he said It wasn't safe. So what about mining isnt safe?

Why wouldn't it be safe, not sure I follow.

If it wasn't safe, not that many people would do it.

This is entirely false, providing you don't get malware. (Just don't be stupid)

why would they hack into your account? only if you get like a sketchy wallet service thatcould happen, but then you would need to have a lot of bitcoins in your account already to even appeal to hackers.

the only real danger of mining is the constant load on your components, which causes faster wearing of said components.

if you look it up you will find the info eth uses a DAG thats stored into the vram its not quite 3gb yet but in less than 4 months it be over 3gb so u might be able to mine for a few months then no more

Probably mixing it up with hackers creating malware that makes your computer mine coins for them... If you mine coins for yourself then there's nothing unsafe about it. Same as ransomware hackers that create malware which uses encryption to lock all your files unless you pay them... Doesn't mean using encryption is unsafe. It doesn't cause you to become exposed to threats, it is the threat when implemented as malware. But if you're the one implementing the encryption and have control over it, it's not a threat, and doesn't expose you to any other kind of threat. Same with coin mining.
