27" iMac or a MacPro for Video Editing

sauce-c

My dad owns a marketing and consulting business and has been very frusturated with his older 21.5" iMac. He's ready to upgrade, but I'm having trouble picking what to recommend. Im between either a specced up 27" iMac with a i7, 16gb RAM, Radeon 580 8gb, and idk about the HDD/SDD. The other option would be the base model MacPro with the 6 core Xeon, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD, and Dual FirePro D500 3gb memory. He does heavy multitasking and video editing in FinalCut Pro, what are your thoughts?

Or just build a hackintosh

That's what I would do, but I know he doesn't have the time or want to deal with possible troubleshooting and other issues that arise with that type of project.

Hmmmm.... the iMac 5K is a total beast, but the Mac Pro would probably have a bit more performance. But then it's also more expensive if you count needing a screen and peripherals, where the iMac includes one of the best screens you can possibly get (seriously, there's a 5K iMac at my work and it's jaw droppingly good), a good keyboard, and decent mouse (I personally don't like the shape of the Apple mouse and use an MX Master).

Im most concerted about price/performance at this point.

Then I'd say the iMac 5K, Mac Pros are pretty overpriced. And the iMac 5K comes with a 7700K or something IIRC, so it'll be a beast anyways. If he is a heavy multitasker though, you may want to spring for 32GB RAM (make sure it's of the models that you can replace the RAM on, then get the least RAM possible from Apple because they way overcharge, and buy 32GB aftermarket).

Maybe buy the iMac Pro?
