I have found out that the modem my isp gave me is overheating in hot temperatures.

When I look at PC CASE GEAR (an Australian computer hardware store), it only gives me the option for modem and router combinations.(https://www.pccasegear.com/category/200_1439/networking/modem-routers)

What is the best modem without a router that can provide at least 100 gigabit connection?

Thanks.

Do you have DSL service (comes through traditional copper telephone lines) or Cable/DOCSIS service (comes through coaxial TV lines)? Do your current phones connect through the modem? (common with DOCSIS service, if you aren't sure, unplug the modem's power, and then pick up your phone to see if you still have a dial tone) We can't make any recommendations unless we know both these answers.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Sorry... I completely forgot about these things.

I have a cable service and my phones don't connect through the modem.

Here is the layout of my network:

Cable-------Modem-------Apple airport extreme access point/router/3 port switch-------cisco Catalyst 2960 PoE 24 port switch (Not optimal for home networks, but I got it free)

Can you do a speed test and post the results here?

Keep in mind that:

1. I can have up to 30mbps download in off-peak times

2. Australia is getting the NBN (national broadband network), and they promise speeds up to 100Mbps of download and 40Mbps upload (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-26/how-to-check-if-your-nbn-plan-is-delivering-speeds-as-promised/8745998)

Alright, I'd say build yourself a router that can handle the speeds. Pfsense for example and then get AP around your house.

Would there be any way to use a NUC (a usb nic) or do i have to get a pcie nic

What specs should I get... would a core 2 duo be good enough or should I get an i5, and how much ram would be needed?

edit: sorry wrong topic

You can use your modem as a gateway and the pfsense box as the router.

I'm running my Pfsense box on a dual core Pentium. Core 2 duo would be fine. Ram, I'd 4GB. As for network card, Get a dual network card. Connect the on board NIC to the modem and the Network card to a switch. Other one you can use for your Wi-Fi which is what I've done. :)

my modem hasn't got a router in it, so I still need a new modem. Which model should I get?

Also I have a modem in my ap, so what happens when there are two (pf sense and airport extreme modem)

I'm sure you're using a modem right now? What model is it?

my wifi has a router in it. Will this stuff things up?

try this if switch has 3 rows (2 with 9 eths 1 with 10)

plug modem eth into swith top row single eth(one that seperated from group of 8)

now take row 1 group of 8 and take furthest eth to row2 single port

do same steps for row 3 except last ethport of row3 goes to routers wan port

now see if modem overheats still

If your on NBN or switching then be careful as FTTN needs modem with IP for the phone and ALL NBN mode modems are fairly locked down by most ISP's. You would be better to ask this question in ISP forum on http://whirlpool.net.au/

Not a very likely to have modem without a router in it.  All OPTUS modems have routers built in and mostly they are locked down.

Have no idea what you're looking at but NO regular cisco switch has 3 rows of ports....

All 24 port switches are two rows of 12
