if you have 64bit CPU then you should run the 64 bit version of the game because it is optimized to run on a 64 bit processor. No other way to put it..

But Why do there has to be 2 versions, Cant there be one lucher and it would pick 64bit automatically?

It's EA man.. who knows..

To be honest I'm not sure, many programs do that, especially design suites like software from Autodesk or Adobe..

You could write a little program that was the launcher and it would determine which bit version to run based on if WOW64 was running in the background, but I don't know why it hasn't been done.. Programmers probably ran out of coffee..

why did they do it this way

Battlefield 4 was supposed to be a 64 bit only, that's why the beta was only available on 64 bit machines.

DICE warned about this for over a year now, but people disregarded it http://www.tomshardware.com/news/DICE-64-bit-frostbite-engine-windows-8-games,15731.html

While this decision by DICE is for the better, to encourage people to upgrade, there was a lot of negative feedback from it and DICE and EA realized that most 32 bit users are not gonna upgrade just for Battlefield. This would have been a potential loss of millions of dollars to EA and DICE, so in a last minute decision, they decided to include a 32 bit version... this decision was most likely done after the beta was released.

Now making a 32 bit version that works by itself takes a while, it cannot be done in less than 4 weeks. So DICE opted out to build the 32 bit version, on top of the original 64 bit, and just making users download both.

This is evident by size of Battlefield 4 compared to 3. Battlefield 3, without patches and updates, is 11GB; Battlefield 4, without patches and updates, is over 23GB!

Obviously if you were able to download only 32 bit or only 64 bit version of Battlefield 4, it would still be bigger than BF3, but not more than twice is big.

Some systems are still sold with 32bit systems. They may be playable but Battlefield just needs more than 4gigs of ram to run well. You can set BF from Origin to launch only to 64bit (handy if you have peripheral profiles related to .exe). Just from My Games menu right click on BF4 icon -> Game properties -> Start this game (etc): Battlefield 4 (x64). After that it launches to 64bit version.

Oh and you don't need to launch it from Origin, just use Battlelog.
