HELP I MESSED UP

Go to solution Solved by -rascal-,

Well, looking the P8Z68-V PRO manual...

There is a clear RTC RAM jumper on the motherboard (page 2-20 of the manual)

This jumper allows you to clean the Real-Time Clock (RTC) RAM in the CMOS. You can clear the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameter by erasing the CMOS RTC RAM data. The onboard button cell battery powers the RAM data in CMOS, which include system setup information...

  1. Turn OFF the computer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 (default) to pins 2-3. Keep the cap on pins 2-3 for about 5-10 seconds, then move the cap back to pins 1-2.
  3. Plug the power cord, and turn ON the computer.
  4. Hold down the <DEL> / <Delete> key during the boot process and enter BIOS setup to re-enter data.

Jumper position (default)

1--2--3

[{}{}]

Change jumper position to

1--2--3

    [{}{}]

UEFI BIOS "EXIT" Menu (page 3-31 of manual)

The Exit menu items allow you to load the optimal default values for the BIOS items, and save or discard your changes to the BIOS items. You can access EZ Mode from the Exit menu.

Load Optimized Default

This option allows you to load the default values for each of the parameters on the Setup menus. When you select this option of if you press <F5>, a confirmation window appears. Select YES to load the default values.

"stock cooler"

There's your problem. You NEED a better cooler for overclocking. Try a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO if you're short on cash or a Noctua NH-D14 if you can go balls to the wall.

1. Power on the computer.

2. After you hear the "beep" or as soon as you see anything on the screen, press the "Del" key (It could be a different key depending on your motherboard).

3. You are in BIOS. There should be a shortcut key to load optimized defaults (It's F10 for me)

4. Save and exit your bios, reboot.

Or alternatively

1. Buy an aftermarket cooler, install it

2. Enjoy your overclock.

Go the the bios, and when you press escape, there should be an option to load the optimized settings which will put it back to stock. Also, you should get a CM Hyper 212 EVO if you can.

Pretty much what Prothetik said, go to the BIOS and reset it to default settings.

1. Power on the computer.

2. After you hear the "beep" or as soon as you see anything on the screen, press the "Del" key (It could be a different key depending on your motherboard).

I tried doing that but it didnt work! i even uninstalled the Ai suite 2 because it could be overriding the bios but that didnt work either! i dont know what else to do.

Removing AI Suite II does nothing to alter the situation. Overclocking is done in the BIOS and it is in the BIOS that you must correct the situation. Restart your computer and press DEL when prompted to. Without knowing the motherboard explicit directions for resetting to factory defaults is difficult. But that is what you need to do.

I find that hard to believe. There has been....since the beginning of motherboards, a way of resetting the setting within the BIOS.

If not, you can always clear the CMOS by either removing a jumper on the motherboard OR removing the button battery.

Depending if your ASUS motherboard is a low-end entry model, or a high-end model (i.e. ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z) there should be a physical button that you can press to reset the BIOS. The button may be located on the rear I/O and/or somewhere on your motherboard.

Speaking of motherboards, what particular motherboard do you have?

We could help you out further...and quicker...if you can give us the model (i.e. ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 / ASUS M5A97 R2.0 / etc)

i don't think pulling out the MoBo battery will reset your BIOS settings tbh :-)

The motherboard that i have right now is the Asus P8Z68-V PRO ATX LGA1155. and ive tried doing the optimized settings approach by pressing f5 but it still has not help me. What is a cmos reset? where would i find how to do it.

CMOS reset does what it says. It reset every setting in BIOS making it like it was when first booted. So if you have any changes done in booting order, those must be corrected after reset. All unlocks will also be reverted into stock mode. After this you should enter windows in Safe Mode and make sure that AI Suite is really uninstalled or doesn't start with windows and try to load settings. It shouldn't do so anyway but since you are bit over reacting to situation, best to be sure.

To find how to clear CMOS, refer to mobos manual. Its either jumper (switch) inside or outside of case. Or button in more expensive boards. You just flip it to ON position as indicated on mobo manual (I can't give detailed guide since its different between brands) and then back and boot to BIOS. Don't try to boot while switch is ON position, nothing will happen.

should have been clearer ......pulling out the battery when not connected to ac (thought it was obvious to disconnect from mains) ..............and then obviously  ...after a few seconds put the battery back in! no power to keep bios settings = reset to factory default (unlike storage drives)!

it does as long as the mobo has no power going to it. it forgets your settings and goes back to default. i know this because when i was putting high voltage through my socket 478 rig i left the battery out so that if it crashed because of heat or voltage it would not try to boot back up with such a high voltage that might kill it very quickly.
