Get a new z270I or get a used z170I(Very very cheap)

Hey guys

I am building a mini-itx build and wanted to know if there was any downsides to getting a z170i pro gaiming motherboard with this build(https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G9Kbqk), I already have all the parts except for the motherboard. I was going to buy the z270I from asus but a friend of mine offered to sell his z170i to me for next to nothing. Looking at the side i can't seem to find any reason not to do the deal but wanted to ask here first :D All help is appreciated (PS, the BIG shuriken 2 does fit inside the node 202, checked multiple places and all says it fits fine)

I don't see any reason not to get the Z170. Just make sure it has an updated BIOS to support Kaby.

Though, depending on your use case, Coffee or Ryzen might be better.

I'd just go with the Z170i as long as he's updated the BIOS.

Hey there, PcPartPicker is saying that the CPU cooler isn't compatible with the Fractal Design - Node 202 so you might want to change the cooler.

I personally would just go for a cheap Z170 as long as it works properly and it's BIOS is updated to the latest one.

Now make sure that the BIOS is up to date because you might have problems with your CPU.

Yes, I did read that. He could return the CPU, if he decides it's worth the hassle

I Thought that aswell but when searching r/sffpc i found the following which indicates that it can fit :)

Most of the parts are from a leftover build, switched from m-ATX to m-ITX because i want a much smaller PC(If any1 want to see a cool case, my friend just finished a build in This)

BTW my main concers was the following from asus website:

Quote
  • * Due to Intel® chipset limitation, DDR4 2400MHz memory frequency is only supported by 7th Generation Intel® processors. Higher memory modules will run at the maximum transfer rate of DDR4 2400MHz

Not sure if they mean that i can use my 3200MHZ ram :P

Puget have a great article comparing the two, the TLDR version is 4 less PCI-E lanes and no optane support. I'd go with the z170 the cash will be better spent elsewhere.

I guess this does not mean anything since its a m-ITX build unless its 4 less PCI-E for the m.2 (960 evo) SSD i am gonan use. Would you happend to know this? Gonna look at the article now, Thanks for linking it :D

According to Intel's own website, the 8700K only officially supports up to 2666 MHz. I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, couldn't you ask him?

His specs are a undervolted 6700k (1.09 V, or something like that although i am not quite sure how low he got it) with a Noctua-l9i and he never reaches higher than 67-70 C while pretty much silent, and he uses a mini 1060(with LM, and shroud removed) which never gets above 70 C. I have a few pictures of it if it would be something you want to see :D

You will have plenty of lanes there are 16 lanes from the CPU usually dedicated to the 16x graphics slot and 20 lanes from the z170 chipset (z270 has 24) assigned to m.2, sata, usb3 and all the rest.
