I am looking at putting a gtx 960 into a computer at work and I can't tell if it will work. I think it's a 265w psu, correct me if I'm wrong. Will it work?

Specs:

i5 2500

8gb ram

250gb ssd

20171114_162244.jpg

should be ok. though 265W is low. even for that gpu.

might be unstable tho. try to get at least 350.

do not overclock.

Yes, just barely. Do not overclock.

adithyay328 doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm running an OC 4.0Ghz 1700x + and overclocked 1070, with 12 fans, and a D5 pump and that max I've hit is 198watts on my kill-a-watt.

200 watts? Ok, I accept that my statement above's wrong, but doesn't a 1070 have a TDP of 170 watts?

The 960 has a 120W TDP, the CPU has a 95W TDP. What I'm worried about is the 12V rail configuration. If the CPU is on 12VA, and the GPU is on 12VB, the GPU will draw over 9A. If both are on 12VA, both will have to share the 204W. Definitely change it for a decent unit.

:)

TDP don't mean jack. I do rendering and I get 198 watts from the wall on a theoretical kill-a-watt. Not a hypothetical wattage estimate.

Well damn. I was basing my wattage estimations from the start on TDPs. Not trying to make excuses, but I guess that's where I went wrong.

I'm not saying you're wrong, that's why I stated theoretical and not hypothetical wattage. This is the number I see on the kill-a-watt. Hypothetically a 170W TDP GPU + a 95W TDP GPU is already 265W without any fans and peripherals.

Don't worry about it. I got my information corrected, which helps everybody.

I really doubt that. Anandtech's 1070 review got 305W at the wall under a realistic load

That's strange; he seems to know his stuff and seems pretty accurate, and the silicon lottery doesn't crap on people this hard. I suspect there was extra hardware in the test on AnandTech.

I'm assuming that they do some sort stuff like Prime 95 + a super hard GPU benchmark that loads everything that the CPU and GPU has to offer to get the most maximum wattage possible. Because a CPU running at 100% for gaming will use less wattage than a CPU running at 100% for like Prime95 or other synthetic tests.

A 4,2 GHz 4960X, yes. It shouldn't make that big a difference in Crysis

:)

It says the load is Crysis 3

That's a fair assumption. 300 watts, based on your use case, seems like a lot, still.

My overclock was cleared apparently. Resetting overclocks back to +120GPU and 4.0Ghz on 1700x hits me at 313W running Graphics Rendering. But without the overclock I was seeing 206W, prior my 198W statement.
