currently running an i7 4790 (non k), gtx1080ti, considering upgrade to either i5 8600k or i7 8700k, as i feel like my current cpu bottlenecking me in games, which new coffeelake processor is going to be better for me?

the i5 8600k and i7 8700k is a 180AUD (137USD) price difference for me. I want this upgrade to last quite a while, preferably 4 years or more without having any bottleneck issues.

PC is 99% used for gaming, very very rare for me to stream/edit videos/photoshop or anything like that.

"because i feel it's bottlenecking"

monitor fps, cpu, and gpu usage in games and then report back :)

Keep in mind you'll also need new ram and motherboard.

Just OC your i7 as it should be fast enough. And since you are running a 1080ti, upgrade your shitty 1080p monitor to at least 1440p

Id flip them and get a high refresh 1440p. Theres literally 0 point in getting a new CPU if your using a 1080p 60fps screen...

did that in GTA V online yesterday, ran it at 1080p, gpu usage was sitting at around 70% with CPU 90%+

okay, sure. it would help if you mentioned that in your first post :)

Idk why you ask for advice when you effectively already bought the shit.

Tbh I would return all that and get a nice 1440p panel instead. Cpu won't be the Bottleneck anymore and you'll get a nice visual improvement. Better even, get a larger screen as well.

asking for advice on if i should get the 8600k or the 8700k.

but to be honest, that sounds like a better idea, i can make a few bucks reselling that ram and motherboard as well, got them off guys who bought wrong parts.
so a i7 4790(non k) be enough for 1440p gaming?

Totally. Especially at only 60hz... CPU usage is only important at high refresh rates most of the time. Which is why your gpu is being underutilised. Your RES is so low that your gpu has no work to do because your cpu cant queue frames fast enough.

You could upgrade to an i7-4790 (K), since you have a Z87 motherboard that supports overclocking, sell your current CPU and squeeze more performance with the K SKU. +The 1080ti is more then capable of handling 1440p gaming at high refresh rates and its even intended to handle 4K gaming as well. I'd only upgrade your components if you feel the need to, are you not getting the right performance out of your current hardware that you would like.

The i7-8700k does have good singlethreaded performance which does benefit in games and performance is going to be greater non the less, plus your getting 50% more cores and 12 threads which is good for your use case. Most games these days dont utilize more then 4 cores, so upgrading to a 6 core CPU might be benefitial for your use case.

I'd say that the 4790k is your most viable option in terms of an upgrade, overclocking it will eliminate some of these bottlenecks+ you will get more performance in games with a decent overclock. I'd suggest upgrade within 2 years to a newer platform.

run a game, and turn on "v-sync". this will lock the game at 60fps.

look at your cpu and gpu usage again, and tell me. that should tell us if it's quick enough.
