Planning a new gaming pc, need advice!

Mad_gamer

Hi all!

Few months ago, I moved to a new place for university and since then, the idea of building myself a gaming rig has keep going around in my head. Recently, I've stumbled across this computer someone was selling at 1500 CAD$ :

CPU : i7-4790K Base Clock 4.0 GHz - Boost Clock 4.4 GHz. OC possible @4.7 GHz stable
GPU : EVGA 970 GTX FTW ACX 2.0 - 04G-P4-2978-KR 1367 MHz 4 GB - OC possible @1405 MHz.
RAM : Kingston HyperX Beast - 2x8 GB - 2400 MHz
Motherboard : MSI Z97 Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150
WaterCooling : Corsair H110i GT 280mm Extreme Performance
Case : Crosair Graphite 760T Black Windowed
Power : Corsair RM650X Gold Plus
Soundcard : Asus Rogue Xonar Pheobus Solo 7.1
Wireless card : Archer T9E - AC1900
SSD : Crucial MX200 - 250Go
HDD - Western Digital - 1To
DVD - Asus DRW-24-F1ST

Should I try negotiating it down and buy a new GPU, like a 1070 or higher, or should I wait for something like the Black Friday and build one completely new?

I have a maximum budget of 2000 CAD$ for a pc including a monitor and an OS. (Less is better as a student)

Thank you in advance!

P.-S. Please be constructive, I'm completely new to this and I want to learn and understand to get into it!

I would build one completely from scratch. You could build a much better machine with your budget.

Intel i7-7700k @ 5.1ghz | Asus ROG Maximus Hero IX | Asus ROG Poseidon Platinum 1080ti @ 2126mhz | 64gb Trident-Z DDR4 @ 3600mhz | Samsung 960 Pro 1tb @ 3500mbps/2500mbps | Crucial 240gb SSD | Toshiba 4tb 7200rpm HDD w/ Crucial 128gb SSD cache | Corsair Hx1000i PSU | EK 360mm Coolstream XE Radiator | EK-Supremacy Evo Waterblock | EK-DDC 3.2 PWM Elite Edition Pump | EK-RES X3 150 RGB Reservoir | Primochill AdvancedLRT Clear Tubing | Primochill VUE UV Blue Coolant | Corsair 570x Crystal RGB Case | 4x 30cm CableMod UV/RGB Widebeam Hybrid Led Strip | 3x 120mm Corsair SP120 RGB Fans | 3x Noctua NF-A14 iPPC 3000rpm Fans | 3x Noctua NF-A12x15 Fan | CableMod ModFlex PSU & SATA Cables | Asus ROG Swift 27" 4k IPS w/G-Sync & LG UD68 27" 4k IPS w/Freesync |

um first of all i beleve that you added one to many zeros. second its a solid system.  that cpu really holds its value really well and its a really good cpu.  the issue is if you were to build a new system with the current prices of parts it may not be worth it.  a 970 is still a solid 1080p card unless you wana play at higher resolustions

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

Yeah, thanks for pointing out the typo. I want to play game like The Witcher 3, Nier Automata (and other recent game) and also some Battlefield and PUBG. Will this card still be able to run them smoothly with decent graphics? Also, what would you be ready to pay for this system?

Taking away the typo, are you still maintaining your opinion? Because as xdeathshot20 said, I feel like the pc part are pretty expensive at the moment aren't they?

Typo?

Yes that is my opinion. That is a solid build, but I don't think I would pay $1500 for it used. Locally, equivalent builds usually sell for a few hundred cheaper. It may not be a big difference, but I've done quite a few builds here recently that would outperform that build for around that same price. I especially feel this way if he plans to game in higher resolutions in the near future

I might pay $800. The 970 is pretty weak in late 2017. For 1500 you could build a 1080 system.

With the weakness of CAD? I still need a monitor and an OS, so I don't know how you can fit that into 1500.

It was written 20 000$ at first.

Could you link me those builds? I don't know how to get to them and I'm interested.

Yeah I could put together a build or two, I'm working right now but when I get a chance, I'll make a parts list. If for some reason I forget, you're welcome to PM me and remind me. What resolution are you you planning on gaming in?

This is far from a good deal. To buy the equivalent current tech would be less than CA$1,900. And the cpu would smoke the i7-4790K.

This is a current tech system that has roughly the same gaming performance and much better performance in other areas.

Here's one I just threw together. Granted, if I was building this myself, I would probably spend a little more on a few components, some of these are definitely budget oriented, I mostly just three this together so you could get an idea of the price disparity between what you would get used vs what you could get new. This build would considerably outperform that one you are looking at.

Hey @PETRGangKing, @brob, @Daniel Z., @xdeathshot20!

I really appreciate your help on this and I’ve look at all your builds in addition to saving them to see which one I could go for taking in consideration the sales incoming.

Also, during that time, I’ve receive a text from the seller of the prebuild computer and he might agree to sell the computer while also including a monitor, a keyboard and a copy of windows 10 pro (3 things I need anyway) for something around 1300 (depending on what I’ll be able to negotiate).

Here are the link to these components :

Monitors : https://www.amazon.ca/BenQ-Performance-24-inch-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00ITORITU?th=1

Keyboard: https://www.amazon.ca/ROCCAT-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Illumination/dp/B00FB4BUMW

Do you think his price is better now?

Thank you in advance!

In that case , yes, I would say lowering the price and the addition of the monitor makes the used setup a much better value. Me personally, I'd still spend more to buy new, but I can definitely understand going with the used one to save some time and money.

@Mad_gamer

With a price reduction and the addition of Windows 10 Pro, a 144Hz monitor, and a gaming keyboard it's a reasonable deal. But I wonder at the ability of a GTX 970 to keep up with a 144Hz monitor
