Gaming PC to Gaming Server pc

Just upgraded my main rig to something more up to date .

Also i had some graphics card , psu , ssd , ram that i left behind while i was upgradeing my old main pc . I wanted to make some use of it and i think to meke it a server rig . 

I have no idea how to mount a server or if this will work as one . 

It will be a long journey of error and learning that im excited for .

I wanted to start asking you guys what are the pros and cons of this , focusing on this hardware for making a gaming pc server (private online games).

Main pc (gaming mostly)

8700k 4,7ghz / Asus Maximus X Apex/ 32 gb ddr4/ x2 evga sc2 1080 ti's SLI / m.2 512 gb /1000w psu.

 

Server pc 

5960x 4.5ghz/evga 280 clc / x2 evga sc2+ 980 ti's Sli /64 gb ddr4/1000w psu / asus rampage v extreme / 4 tb ssd's.

its fairly simple, get rid of the 980ti´s and get a super low end GPU just incase you need a monitor on the server at some point.

install Linux or Windows depending on what game servers you want to run and what OS they require and install the game servers.

 

Done.

 

the PSU and the SSD´s are total overkill for this and i guess you internet connection will not be able to to deliver the network speed required to really get load on this server.

 

You are probably better of selling the whole thing and getting something much cheaper and more suited to what game servers you want to run.

Your well on your way with that hardware you may consider going all out with an HTPC or a full blown NAS at this point a few new WD reds and your software and os of choice i.e. freeNAS unRAID or the like and have at it your CPU has a score of 16000 that's plenty for plex and if your into VM's that too is a plus with a purpose built NAS

Think it's very overkill for something like hosting gameservers for yourself and your friends.

True but the OP has this laying around if not selling it then put it to good use

Sure, but he shouldnt have issues selling a system like that.

But if hes not doing it, then its fine i guess, will do anything you throw at it just fine.

Bad idea for FreeNAS CPU and Mainboard don't support ECC. if you don't care about data integrity it's fine go ahead unRAID doesn't need ECC but I wouldn't trust my data to it. It's fine for a throwaway media server (Stuff that if you lose you can just download again).

 

It'd be a ripper game server though. plenty of horsepower!
