300 Megabit per second!?

RileyTheFox

Hey. I just got the news that my Dad is getting our house 300mbps internet from Virgin Media here in the UK. Now, my current internet speed is 15mbps. So I wanted to know, in terms of reality, what will this change feel like?

I know I will be able to download games and whatever at ludicrous speeds, but I've never experienced this sort of speed. ever. If someone is able to do the math, how long would a typical 30GB - 40GB game take to download? When it currently takes anywhere between 5-7 hours? I'm honestly super excited for this internet speed as I will be able to do anything I want lol.

Also the upload is around 20Mbps. Would that mean I could live stream in 1080p and still have loads of bandwidth left over?

well, to put it bluntly 300mbps is freaking fast, but if you ever end up downgrading or using public hotspots you'll be in pain

i used to have 300mbps and trust me - it was great! few gb file took like 15 sec avg so 30gb maybe about 2 mins?

and about the upload, u could live stream because i had similar upload speed before (at 1080p)

Yeah that is pretty decent download speed, I currently have a 100mbps and it is more than enough for me. Streams 4k just fine. But you are missing an important part of the puzzle here, not all your devices will support this kind of download. So unless you are running an Ethernet cable to your desktop (which I strongly recommend), I'd go on Amazon and buy a nice PCI-e wireless card for your desktop.

That's bloody insane!

You'll easily see the difference from 15Mbps for downloads of any kind.

I get that, but I honestly can't wait to see the typical 40 minutes for a 5GB file turn into something like a minute.

Regarding the download speeds, it will be better in some cases, but not all. A lot of servers (such as the ones serving Google Drive) are fast enough, but not all. For some sites you may not notice an increase in download speed at all.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Running cat5e to my switch and Desktop. Will need to get a Gigabit switch though as it's maximum is 100mbps

This site is good for calculating file transfer times http://www.calctool.org/CALC/prof/computing/transfer_time

That's only theoretical, and even so, you won't get that from a LOT of servers online.

While downloading one thing at once will only be noticeable if supported, the largest improvement for me was what I could do in parallel. Sometimes when working on large projects that involve getting bits and pieces from other collaborators, I could be downloading multiple large files at once. Rather than having to "wait in line" getting all the pieces at the same time saved a ton of time.

Hey, that is why I pay for Real-Debrid. They download the file you want (or torrent) and then once they have it hosted on their server, you download it from them at a solid and uninterrupted 300mbps.

True, but it's a good indication if you're able to find a lucky server. I download Microsoft ISO files a lot at work on 1Gbps link and it maxes out nicely :)
