Hey everyone, it's been a very long time since I built a PC and I'm not really sure where to start. My budget is about $1000 give or take. The PC is for a mix of school and gaming. I'm an engineering student, so I would like it to have the ability to run some cad/simulation software at a reasonable speed, and I would like it to be as future proof as possible for gaming considering the budget. While I mostly game on console there are PC exclusives that I would like to play on reasonably high settings. I've also started using the steam link to approximate a console experience for games I can play with a controller, but my current build is too slow for the steam link. I don't really have a preference for nvidia/amd/intel stuff, I only care about reliability and value (though the new nvidia cloud geforce stuff is a bit of a turnoff). Also, my current PC is old and dying, so I'm assuming that none of the parts besides the hard drives can carry over to a new build. Any help deciding parts is appreciated, especially with black friday rapidly approaching. Thanks.

For a base I'd say this:

- i5 8400 (the 6 cores will help a lot in CAD/ simulation software
- wait for spring 2018 for budget mobo

- 8 gb (2 x 4) and upgrade in the future to 16 gb

- Nvidia geforce gtx 1070 (if you can get a good deal)

- SSD boot drive

And of course RGB (Jk)

I'd rather take the i5 8400 for multi-core performance in CAD/simulation

You can downgrade to a 1060 or a RX 470 or you could downgrade to 8gb of ram to make room for a better motherboard you could also get a normal case.  I made it an ITX build because you said you were a student so you will be able to move around easier or even get a 1600 or 1600x upgrade.

I'll have to double check when I get home, but I believe the build was middle of the road about 4 or 5 years ago. I think the gpu is an NVidia 660, and the cpu is an i5 from around that same launch time. The computer is my friends old one since my original died a couple of years ago. For the most part all I play is dota 2 and civ, so it's been able to handle that, but now it's starting to crash and slow down a lot.

Thank you everyone for the tips, I appreciate the help!
