Is a GTX 1080 worth it?

showerhandle
Go to solution Solved by Jurrunio,

Take it. A 1070 costs over $400 now. It might drop after 1070ti become more available, but the same amount of money for a 1080? No reason not to take it.

So i am upgrading my brothers system as a gift for the holidays. I want to put a new graphics card in his system for now and need help. I have a really good friend who builds pc's and is willing to cut me a deal on a gtx 1080 for $350. I was wondering if this upgrade is worth while as he only plays at 1080p. His system is an i5-6500 and a gtx 960 4gb right now with 8gb of ram.  I know the gtx 1080 is overkill for 1080p but at this price it seems ok, what do you think?

main system build --> i7-7700K (at 5.0 ghz), MSI Z270 SLI Motherboard, corsair vengeance lpx 8gb ddr4 2666mhz,  costume liquid cooling loop with 360 mm radiator on CPU, GTX 1080 gigabyte windforce OC, 1TB WD drive, 128 gb samsung nvme m.2, EVGA 850 watt semi modular power supply, CM storm stryker case (ya not ideal for costume loop), VIOTEK GN34C 34 inch curved monitor <----

For $350, the resolution doesn't matter, $350 for a 1080 is really good as long as it works

Try using the PSU Tier List!

Buy it. This price is amazing and your brother will be super happy for looong time. There are many people that buy gtx 1080 while playing at 1080p just because they want high fps. And for this price you'll have hard time to buy 1070 normally (depends where you live).

You got nice rig man and a nice upgrade path to i7 4790k or i7-5775C. I'd hang on unless I'd want a new mouse, keyboard, headset or monitor.
