Hi! I am looking into making a new pc for 1440p gaming, interweb browsing, and possibly some audio recording/editing. Since the holidays are coming and Intel just released their new CPUs, I wanted to part out a build to get an idea of what I want to buy.

This computer would have to
Run games at 1440p hitting at least 60 fps

Be upgradeable and future proofed

Have plenty of storage for 1 or 2 different users

Cost about $1,300 including OS, not including gpu or monitor (I’m planning on upgrading my graphics card later)

I’m quite clueless when it comes to the CPU, cooler, and MOBO selection but I have a better idea of what the other parts will be. The choice for cpu will also influence the range of cooler I will choose as well. Here are my thoughts:

  • I’m not sure if the extra cores and threads of the i7-8700k or RyZen 7 1700x will be worth the small price increase over say a i7-7700k in a gaming perspective
  • If I get an i7-7700k the MOBO will become outdated and the z270 chipset obsolete when I decide to upgrade to an 8th gen or future i7 that uses the z370 MOBO
  1. If 6/12 cores/threads is not needed for gaming and a z270 MOBO becomes obsolete, then the i7-7740x with a x299 board might be an option (there are some 4 ram slot x299 MOBOs for the i7-7740x)
  • If I get an overclocking Intel CPU I will probably want an AIO water cooler

Big air cooler towers may not fit the aesthetic of my build

Depending on the CPU I might need a larger radiator

I currently have a GTX 1060 FE and plan to upgrade that later to a better graphics card a GTX 1070 or better down the line so I can focus on the other hardware now. The 60 fps at 1440p should be defined by a 1070 or higher and not a 1060.

If I could get these ideas cleared up and get a good idea of what hardware I need that would be great.

Thanks!

Ryzen then.

1700(X) and good X370 board should ensure futureproofness and good overclockability of 7nm node, bcoz AMD + GF will rather increase the performance by ~40% than lowering power consumption, current Zen is already well efficient.

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

I would appreciate it if you went into some detail as to why the i7 7740x is a dumb option and as to why ryzen is the best option. This would help me understand more for future situations.

Thanks

Also NVMe is overkill for a gaming pc ... Id rather have a 1TB SSD then a 250GB NVMe ...

MrTic, id like to hear your thoughts.

First: would a 4/8 core/thread cpu be just as good for gaming as a 6/12 one?

second: do i need a platinum rated power supply for this or is gold/bronze ok?

id also like to hear your thoughts on the i7 7740k.

An I7 7700k IS good BUT the 8700K is just a MONSTER cpu for not much more and its also the new gen

And for the 2nd point, a PSU i never ever skimp on ... i wouldnt go lower then a gold rated EVGA one tbh, not for this kind of build :D

3rd point The 7740X is a 4c8t on X299 platform .... where the average MB cost 400$ .... its retarded in every single way

You go 8C16T on X299 as a minimum that makes sense

And a 8700K would eat the 7740X for breakfast 24/7 while being cheaper

These are my opnions tough

My thought about the i 7740x is that i found a $170 x299 motherboard from gigabyte which only has 4 ram slots, as well as one from msi. For $50 more and for cores that aren't used in gaming is it still worth? i dont see me needing the extra cores for gaming.

Get a 8700k if your budget fits it. This CPU is a monster with super high overclockability, awesome IPC, low-latency ring bus and 6c/12t. This CPU will be in my opinion another legend like i7-2600k. The 8700k shouldn't bottleneck gpus for next 5 years or more and should be fine even after 8 years. One thing to note though - this CPU wont be upgradeable just like any other top-tier intel CPU.

Oh and forget about i9 cpus or threadripper - their gaming performance is terrible for price and gaming-grade cpus like 8700k have enough cores to do some productivity work.

The cores can be used though.

At any rate, even an 8600k would be a better buy than a 7740x.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
