GTX 1080 for 1440p or wait for VEGA

Hello guys,

what do you think? Sould I buy a new 1080 or 1080TI now to play the new NFS Payback at 1440p or should I wait a bit more for VEGA.

1080ti is the fastest "gaming" card available. If you have the available funds for it, the logic dictates to always go after the fast you can afford.

Honestly, as seen in benchmarks, VEGA isn't actually that good.

Except when it's CPU bottlenecked.

But anyway, overclocked Vega may perform like GTX 1080 but consumes way more power and usually also costs more so it's not worth it (unless you can find a great deal, which is unlikely atm).

So if you are at 1440p 60Hz, go for the GTX 1080, there is no reason to grab 1080ti at 60Hz, it's just a waste of money.

If you are at 1440p 100Hz+ then sure, go ahead and grab the 1080ti if you can afford it.

If you want 100fps+ then 1080Ti of course. Vega is out and honestly a bit of a disapointment. If you target 60fps then a regular 1080 is fine

Depends what Monitor do you have. 1440p yes. but Freesync / G_Sync? 60 Hz or 144 Hz?

Do you NEED ultra settings and the highest fps possible ever? Don't you mind turning settings down? Don't you mind, if you don't have 144 fps always?

Many factors.

Yes, the Reference models. However, since Reference Coolers are utterly Garbage, and i wouldn't even use them for ITX builds tbh (except with a HARD undervolt + downclock, to reduce heat and noise)^^

So.. he probably means Custom Models, which aren't out yet.

And i share the same optinion. reference, Founders, whatever, has no relevance. I would never recommend a non-custom Model for normal users (who don't have extremely special builds, like ITX without any fans)

That's because they were designing it to compete with the regular 1080 at most.  1080ti was a response to Vega.

Exactly, however the Vega 64 looks quite bad even when compared to a regular Founders 1080. Which is a problem.

Vega is a few % slower overall (across multiple Games), consumes almost double the Power, is Louder, and in many countries (at least in germany) only with deals the cheapest is 499€, which is still slightly more expensive than Custom 1080s.

My opinion for this Thread:

Stick to Nvidia. You get better prices, better performance, better power consumption (thus, MUCH better Performance per Watt).

There is literaly only 1 reason to wait for Vega Customs: Your Monitor uses Freesync. In which case, get AMD, and ignore Nvidia.

VRR like Freesync / G-Sync really do make a difference, at least for my eyes. ^^

It's hard to say. Depends on if you can wait. I just grabbed a 1080 for 1440p and it is more than adequate but also a little disappointing in some games. In most modern games (like BF1, battlefront 2 beta, etc) set to max settings I get 80-120fps. Some badly optimized games (GR Wildlands, PUBG) I can't even manage 60 without dropping some settings. Volta should be a good improvement but you'll still be waiting a while.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

The real question is what do you want to do? How badly do you want to upgrade?

If you can wait, then wait. If you don't want to wait, then buy now. Nothing says you can't sell a 1080/1080Ti next year when Volta releases if you decide to buy now, assuming Volta is worth upgrading to from an 80 class Pascal.
