So my PC just died today (RIP) and i started taking all the easy parts out first (GPU, RAM, and hard drvie). i wanted to plug my drive into my laptop to see if my files were ok. so i got my SATA to USB 3.1 wire and plugged it in but my laptop wont read it. is there anything i can do like install a program or something or is it that my HDD draws to much power (its 3TB Seagate drive)?

It will need an external power supply. Which cable did you buy?

Does it appear as a drive in any way? or does nothing come up as it plugs in?

Do you feel the drive spin up if you touch it? If it isn't getting power( as in only the data plug is plugged in) it won't spin up, and won't appear as a drive within windows/OSX

When I go to "This PC" i see it as a drive but when i double click it it asks me to put a disk in the drive. Also i see power is going to the wire as the little orange light its glowing

I bought this cable a while back http://a.co/5iBVj5O

That should power a laptop drive but if it's a desktop drive it will need an external power supply.

welp its a desktop drive rip me

I assume the PSU on your dead PC still works?

Remove the PSU

Connect power to the drive

Connect the drive to the computer using your cable

Get the 12 pin connector on the PSU and short black to green with a paperclip

Connect PSU to wall outlet

???

Profit

Yeah, that has external power so will work however there's no guarantee the drive isn't dead so you might end up getting that and still not get your files back.

this one is only $20 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817986030&cm_re=SATA_USB_adapter-_-17-986-030-_-Product:D

also: I recently recovered a lot of photos and videos from an HDD with a damaged partition with a simple program called Photorec http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Really handy program if you find out it doesn't detect the filesytem if it's corrupted
